Conciliation Council Intervenes
In Manure Workers’ Strike
Px\RTIES CALLED TOGETHER Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, July 10. At the instance of the Conciliation Commissioner (Mr. R. E. Price) negotiations will be opened on Thursday between the employers and workers with the idea of arriving at a basis for a settlement of the strike at the chemical manure works at Otahuhu, Westfield and Te Papapa which has now been in progress for two weeks.
Notification to attend a meeting of the Conciliation Council to deal with the dispute was received today by the parties. Tbe workers had placed their case in the hands of tlio Auckland branch of the New Zealand Federation of Labour but the latest development means that representatives of the Chemical Workers’ Union will attend u meeting of the Conciliation Council which will be presided over by Mr. Price. It is intended that Mr. W. Cuthbert, vice-president of the Auckland branch of the Federation of Labour, will represent the federation in the absence from Auckland of Mr. F. G. Young (president) who will be in Wcl lington. It is announced that the fertiliser works employers have decided to be present at the meeting on Thursday. They have adopted the attitude throughout the ’trouble that the proper procedure was for the union to file claims through the Conciliation Council for a new award and that they were not prepared to deal with the questions put forward in the dispute by the workers except through the council. However, the union has not filed claims through the Conciliation Council as suggested by tbe employers, the initiative in setting in motion the machinery for conciliation coming from Mr. Price.
