Covent Garden Russian Dancers

Tremendous interest is being shown at the appearance in New Zealand of the world famous Coy eat Garden Bufcei&n dances, who will be paying a visit to Palmerston North on Saturday next for a season of one matinee and one evening performance at the Opera House. The tour is under the direction of tho well-known impressario, Maurice Ralph, who has handled many well-known world stars. The Russian dancers are u grouj) of the principals of the Covant Garden Russian ballet who recently had such a great success in the cities of the Dominion. The company’s programme is really a choreographic world cruise as it embraces classic, folk and traditional dances, “ Les Pylphides," “Les Matelots," “Tarentclla," “Blue Bird" and “Carnaval" are among some of the classics to be danced, the traditional numbers will include Spanish and Russian dances together with popular numbers. The prima ballerina of the company is Rissa Kousnetzova, of whom the Melbourne Age says “never a face better expressed a soul. Wo have seen her. We shall never forget her." The other ballerina, Mle. Orlova, of whom Tattler says, “Orlova is a lovely dancer. She lias a most expressive face, beautiful limbs, and a good Bouse of character." Valeri Shaelovsky, one of the principal male dauctrs, has visited the Dominion before with the Monte Carlo Ballet. His rapid Russian and character dances have made a prominent name lor him; ho is also a master of makeup. Eduard Sobiliezskv, another of the malo dancers, studied at tho Warsaw Opera House, and was solo dancer at the Opera Flamaude in Anvers. A star in his own right is Feodor Pellach, tho brilliant master musician of the group. This artist has the inner grace of poetry, and a gift of expression, exercised in the nicest tonal shadings, which has brought him to the forefront of pianists. Crowded houses have greeted these talented artists everywhere so intending patrons are advised to make certain of their reservations.
