Hew Railway Carriages New types of railway carriages for service on the main line between Christchurch and Invercargill are being built at Addington workshops under the car-building programme to give & maximum of comfort in addition to meeting ordinary travel requirements. Seven air-conditioned carriages, similar to those used on the West Coast run, are now under construction, and eight of the 30 new second-class carriages are almost ready for service. These weigh more than 27 tons, and have 59 seats, compared with 37 in the present second-class carriages. There are only three single seats in each car, which lias a length !of 50 feet. The seats are air cushioned, and finished in red. Roller bearings are used on all the carriages, which are much superior to the first-class carriages of a few years ago. In addition to the programme of carriage construction, the Addington workshops are also building 400 LA waggons for use on the South Island lines.
