Boxing Notes
(By “Straight Left.”)
After a considerable amount of matchings and rematchings, the following bouts have been arranged and will be fought at the school boxing tourney at Pahiatua next Friday—that is, of course, failing the advent of measles or other childish ailments which soem to become prevalent whenever a boxing tournament is arranged. At least, that’s what happened last year. However, there is no reason to believe that this will recur from present indications. Only those under 5 stone have so far been matched. Tho majority will be matched during next week-end and the matchings published. The two smallest were a “natural”—Barry Lawry (3st. 71bs.) and Fred Benton (3st. 51bs.) — and we confidently predict that they will bring the house down. The next will be a P. and T. affair with Don Kitchen (4.0) and John Husband (3.10) starring. Keith Munro (4.4) and Bruce Carlyon (4.4), Lewis Carrol (4.7) and Strachan Chapman (4.7), Bruce Mills (4.9) and Bon White (4.11) are three other interesting matches. Derek Hodd (4.8) and Arthur Watson (4.6), who it will be remembered were awarded special medals for putting on the best display at last tournament, have again been matched, and are sure to provide thrills. Eon Carbines (5.0) and Garth Pilkinton (4.11) are to meet in a bout in which science is opposed to the more spectacular methods of those connected with Boxing Associations. A bout which should arouse comment in legal and banking circles is that betweea Struan Koberfcson (5.0) and Kichard Siddells (5.0), who display the maximum of energy consistent with the use of boxing gloves. Joe Evans (4.12), a determined pugilist, and Tommy Savwell (4.13), a boxer of the “bouncing” variety, should provide an interesting bout.
Arrangements are well in hand for the tournament, and it is expected that the Drill Hall will be packed for the occasion. Last year’s excellent effort will ensure that the tournament will be highly successful, both from the point of view of boxing and from the point of view of attendance.
A further donation has been received, this time from Mr. W. K. Taylor, of Kohinui, of 10s. The following letter has been received by the teacher in charge of boxing (Mr. Sefton Walsh) from Sir Alfred ltansom:—
“Dear Mr. Walsh.—l am in receipt of your kind invitation to present the prizes at the annual school boxing tournament on the 14th instant. I shall be very pleased to do so. Should anything now unforeseen prevent me from doing so I will advise you.—Yours sincerely (signed) E. A. Ransom.” Remember, 8.15 p.m. is now the time of commencing and the place the Drill Hall next Friday.
