More Demands on Tientsin

JAPANESE THREAT OF FORCE United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. Received Monday, 11.30 p.m. PEKING, July 3. Tlio Japanese-controlled Chinese Government lias despatched to the British and French Embassies a list of demands forming a basis for settlement at Tientsin, and said the Japanese army in North China supported them. They include: (1) That the British and French . Concessions support the new Japan-ese-backed Chinese currency. (2) That the Peking Government be allowed to inspect the banks and business houses in the Concessions. (3) Rigorous control of publications and organisations contrary to the policy of the Peking Government. (4) Joint British, French and Peking Government control of the Concessions. The Japanese spokesman declared that if no compromise was reached in connection with the demands force might be used to attain the objectives. The Japanese army spokesman at Tientsin announces that gendarmes arrested and are holding in custody Mr. E. T. Griffiths, a British engineer of Butterfield Swire’s steamer Yochow, for allegedly insulting the Japanese army. He added that the reported stripping of Mr. John Anderson would bo investigated.

According to Tokio press messages conversations on the Tientsin situation are expected to open at Tokio on Wednesday. The British Consul at Tientsin and other local representatives have arrived in J apan.
