Feilding School Committees
LYTTON STREET The Lytton Street School Committee met last evening, Mr. C. V. Jewell, the chairman, presiding. There were also present Messrs. F. P. Fawcett, W. H. Smith (headmaster), C. V. Guy, E. Wilkinson, J. C. Christian, A. H. Laing and Mesdames Donaldson and Scott. The headmaster reported that the roll stood at 380, with a satisfactory attendance, while there had been a few cases of chickenpox and influenza colds. Messrs. J. Batchelar, a member, and G. Boulton, secretary, of the Wanganui Education Board, and Mr. McCartney, had visited the school on conveyance business relating to the difficulties in regard to the collecting of children from the Awahuri area. This had been satisfactorily solved. Thanks to the Parents’ Association, additional equipment for the school in the way of maps had been received, while the percussion band instruments for the infants had also been received from the school committee. The concreting of an area of the playground was well in hand. Discussing the Awahuri school bus service, Mr. Christian said that the parents appeared to be satisfied at present but there was danger of the trouble recurring on account of the indefinite boundary in relation to the area from which children would be drawn to attend the Lytton Street School. However, it appeared that the immediate difficulties had been solved. The chairman said that the bus at present brought from the Awahuri area 51 pupils every morning, 38 of whom went to the Lytton Street School. MANCHESTER STREET Mr. G. J. Fitzpatrick presided over the meeting of the Manchester Street School Committee last evening. There were also present Messrs. T. Burne, P. Maegaard, J. Campbell, F. J. Gaze and Mesdames P. G. Guy and S. McDowall. The headmaster reported that the roll was quite normal, although the attendance had been affected by cases of chicken-pox and-other illnesses. Four teachers had been absent on account of illness, while Miss Feickert had been appointed to a position with the Miramar School in Wellington. Visitors to the school during the month included the overseas pianist Paul Schramm, who gave a recital to the school, and Mr. Robbie, agricultural officer of the Wanganui Education Board. Correspondence was received from the Wanganui Education Board notifying that a grant had bfeen approved for the erection of an open-air classroom and for alterations to the main building to eliminate the small steps in the class rooms. Approval had also been given to a grant of two-thirds of the cost of installing a tubular heating system for the school rooms. Iu discussing the tubular heating system, it was stated that unless additional insulation work was done, the heating would not be very satisfactory.
