CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING SUCCESSFUL COMPETITION IN PAHIATUA DRILL HALL The Bush Miniature Rifle Association held its firßt championship meeting in tho Pahiatua Drill Hall on Saturday, and thanks to tho energetic assistants, was an unqualified success. The manner in which members of the local clubs came forward and gave their services whether as target stewards, range officers, or scrutineers, and remained on duty throughout the meeting was a tribute to their enthusiasm for the bold step taken by their association and a source of pleasure to the executive. Inseparable from the success of the meeting were the services of Mr. De Lacey, secretary of the Wairarapa Association, who readily agreed to assist at this first meeting and show the local association how to put the competitors through the matches. His efficiency was an inspiration to those helping in lesser capacities. Messrs R. L. Parker, H. B. Yewen and M. Hughes gave prompt and untiring service as target stewards. Messrs J. Sargent, C. Garlick, G. Day, S. Aanensen and R. Keats as range officers, capably controlled the various squads. In the control room were Messrs L. Rusden, W. Eising, W. Keast and C. H. Brown who cheerfully worked long hours marking targets. L. Heayns, the association's president, although officially referee for tho occasion, actively assistod in various other capacities, while the secretary, Mr. J. Thomson, together with Mr. R. McKenzie, had a busy time putting the scores together. It became necessary at the last minute for the association to cater for the competitors, and special thanks are duo to Mrs. Heayns and family for attending to the bulk of tho work and to Mrs. Thomson and Mr. C. Adams for assisting them. Tararua Match. The meeting opened with the Tararua match, 10 shots and an optional sighter. There were 75 A grade and 26 B grade competitors in this match. Some very good targets were returned. W. Henderson, of Konini Club, Harcourt King, of Featherston, and R. Whiteman, of the Hutt Club, took £1 each with 99, R. Clayton, Mrs. King, Rex Porter, A. Fenwick, W. Birch, A. Tait and F. N. Andrews took 5s each with 98, and 5s was divided amongst ten others with 97. In the B grade, G. Weeds, of the Hutt Club, took 10s with 97 , G. W. Keast and T. Palmer took 3s 6d each with 95, and L. Rusden, M. Hughes, A. Cronin and Miss Calder took 3s each with 9.4. Wairarapa Match. The same number of competitors entered for the Wairarapa match of 10 shots and an optional sighter. Competition was now very keen and no fewer than six competitors scored 99 and eight competitors scored 98. The following took 12s 6d each: M. Hodder, Mrs. King, Harcourt King, F. N. Andrews, A. Tait and E. Strong, while 3s each was taken by P. Bussell, H. B. Keene, Bex Porter, G. Sewell, H. Mabey, L. Heayns, B. Keats and G. Day. In the B grade, A. Cronin with 96 took first prize of 10s, Miss Calder and G. Weeds took 3s Gd with 95, W. Pinfold, K. Pryde and W. Keast took 2s 6d each with 94, and T. Palmer, O. Whiteman and M. Hughes took Is Gd each with 93. “Possible in Ladies’ Match. The ladies’ match of seven shots and an optional sighter produced the only “possible” of the meeting. This was obtained by Miss Calder of the Hutt Club who took 10s, Mrs. King took 7s Gd with 69 and Misses Fergus and Gale and Mrs. Fenwick took Is 6d each with G 5. Bush Match. The result of the Bush match in the A grade of 10 shots and optional sighter was the wide distribution of prize money, not less than sixteen competitors participating; 16s 6d w r ent to each of the following with 99; B. Mitchell, H. B. Keene, C. S. Lambert, F. N. Andrews, while G. Hoffinan, H. King, B. Whiteman, W. Eising, B. L. Parker, W. Henderson, A. Brills, B. Jenkins, F. Ebbett, I. Feast, D. P. Donald and E. Strong took 2s Gd each with 98. The B grade results wore: G. Weeds with 99 took 10s; O. Whiteman took 5s with 98 and A. Cronin, O. Sievers, E. Busden, J. P. Sigvertsen, W. Keast, K. PPryde and T. Palmer took 2s each with 93. Aggregate Winners. The A grade optional aggregate over tho Tararua, Wairarapa and Bush matches was won by F. N. Andrews who took £3 with the iino total of 296 out of a possible of 300. E. Strong and Harcourt King took £1 10s each with 295. B. Whiteman with 294 and H. B. Keene and C. Lambert with 292 took 15s each, W. Eising, M. Hodder, W. Birch, Rex Porter, D. P. Donald, H. King and P. Bussell took 5s each with 291. In the B grade optional aggregate over the same matches, first prize of 5s went to G. Weeds with 291, A. Cronin was second with 285 and took 3s 6d. O. Whiteman with 283 took 2s Gd and W. Keast, Miss Calder and O. Sievers took Is each with 282, 280 and 278 respectively. Fourteen pairs entered for the pairs aggregate over these three matches, the winners to take all the entry money. The result was a win for B. Whiteman 291 and C. Lambert 292, total 586, Teams Match. The teams match of five competitors counted over the three matches resulted in a win for tho Hutt: C. C. Lambert 292, R. Whiteman 294, H. It. Keene 292, O. Whiteman 283, G. Weeds 291 —total 1452 out of 1500. Prize 30s. The Masterton Club’s team filled second plaeo with 1447 and took 18s, Makomako team was third with 1441 and took 12s. Other teams were: Aokautere, 1413; Feathers-

ton, .1410; and Longburn, 1343. The final ten now lined up to shoot off. The result was a win for E. Strong of the Longburn Club, who took the gold medal presented by Mr. Felix Bolton with 394. F. N. Andrews was second with 394 and took £1 10s, Har court King with 392 took £l, C. C. Lambert 391 took 30s, while 5s each went to tho following: H. R. Keene 390, R. Whiteman 390, Mrs. King 359, D. P. Donad 387, W. Henderson 38G, W. Birch 385. Presentation of Prizes. Mr. Heayns, the association’s president, then presented the prizes to the winners of the final ten and thanked the competitors for the numerous entries and also expressed the association's gratitude for the medal presented by Mr. Bolton. Applause greeted the president’s eulogy of the work done for the association by Mr. De Lacey who suitably replied. Cheers for the Bush Association were then given by the visitors and thus was concluded a most enjoyable day’s shooting which although involving a colossal amount of detail work, would willingly bo undertaken again by the executive and the band of helpers. .
