Feilding Harriers

THIRD SUCCESS OF D. WHITTAKER Claiming liis third win in succession D. Whittaker put up an excellent performance in the five-mile run organised by the Feilding Harriers’ Club on Saturday afternoon. Weatner conditions were* ideal, the course being from Denbigh Square to Hitchman’s corner and return, and these runs, staged each Saturday, are proving very beneficial to the competitors in their preparation for the first annual relay race against the Marton Club. This event is to be held on July 22, starting at Marton and finishing at Feilding. In Saturday’s race D. Whittaker gave the limit one minute start and was in front on taking the turn at Hitehman’s corner, coming home to win very easily. This success made for the “hat-trick” for him. L. Moore, R. Evans and J. Davenport, the three limit men, all ran good races, finishing second, third and fifth respectively. G. Whittaker was running well until he retired at the turn. J. Gleeson, off 7smin., ran another good race and finished well in fourth place, and E. Batten, off 10-Jmin., also ran well, while J. Davenport showed improved form on last week’s run. The scratch man, R. Lamborton, who gave away 15min. to the limit men, finished close up with a good sprint, to record the fastest time of 2Smin. 45sec. J. Haycock came home close on to Lamberton to finish eighth. The first eight to finish were: D. Whittaker (1min.) 1, L. Moore (limit) 2, R. Evans (limit) 3, J. Gleeson (74min.) 4, J. Davenport (limit) 5, E. Batten (104min.) 6, R. Lamberton (15min.) 7, J. Haycock (lOmin.) 8. The teams race resulted in a win for E. Batten's team with 13 points and R. Lamberton’s team with 22 points. After the race tho runners and officials were entertained at afternoon tea at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hendry in Bailey Street. Mr. G. Coleman conveyed the thanks of members to the hosts for theiT hospitality and invited Mrs. Hendry to accept honorary membership of the club. Mr. Hendry suitably replied.

Club members are reminded of the practice at the gymnasium on Wednesday evening.
