All-Maori Platoon in Territorials

FINE EXAMPLE SET BY HASTINGS Per Press Association. HASTINGS, June 29. Believed to be the first of its kind in New Zealand an all-Maori platoon has been formed in Hastings in the territorial recruiting drive. Twenty Maoris of the district have made a mass enlistment of the platoon has been established which it is hoped will be controlled by native N.C.O.’s and officers. ‘ ‘ This call of the nation has been nobly answered by these Maori people," said the Hastings recruiting officer, Mr. H. McKay, to-day. "Their example is one that is well worthy of emulation." When the Maoris have been medically examined and passed and have taken the oath of allegiance they will b*e fitted with uniforms. It is expected that this will be in about a month’s time.
