Hastings Trial Gallops

IDDO AND PADISHAH FINE DISPLAY OF JUMPING From Our Own Correspondent. HASTINGS, June 29. Contrary to expectation*, there was a great deal of fast work or schooling this morning on the Hastings tracks. The plough was used for all the gallops except one. i • • Lindrum took 52sec. to do his halfmile; he was under a slight restraint throughout. Halley, going easily and well within himself all the way, registered I.IBJ for six furlongs. Laughing Song and Le Toquet just bettered this time immediately after. • • • Yogi, ridden out, beat Eola on the post at the end of a half-mile run in the fair time of 51sec. The latter impressed as a possibility for the Dannevirke Maiden. •- • • Marsyas, alone, recorded 1.35$ for seven furlongs. Kathbella, under a pull over the first part of her five furlongs, ran the distance in 64sec., doing it very impressively. » • * On the inside grass there was little to choose between The Ring and Hunting Mint over a round in 1.46. • » • Thrasher could not foot it over the concluding stages of a round with Blue Tiger, who pulled up well after registering 1.474. He made friends for his Saturday’s engagement. • o • Golden Melody was going slightly better than Hunting Moments over five furlongs in a shade better than 66sec. « • • The hunter, Royal Toast, cleared right away from Smooger over four furlongs in 52$sec. The former may surpriso in the Bracelet on Saturday. * « « At close intervals the order over once round was Haile Selassie, Reipar and Inheritance in 1.425. Reipar is improving with each gallop. • * • Defray and Helios gave an improved exhibition over six hurdles, running the round in 1.45. * * • Iddo (Shields) and Padishah (M' Beatson) gave a fine display of crosscountry work over ten fences. The pace was on throughout. Some of the oldtimers declared that it was the best display they had seen for many years. Padishah again pulled up lame, but eventually walked home all right. WOULD NOT MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE “It amused me to hear the other day that a fairly prominent owner was of opinion that the Press should be barred from reporting gallops at Randwick. This, on the score that the public received too much information, and that, in consequence, owners often had to take shorter prices than they should (writes “ Pilot," of the Sydney Referee). He continued: “Evidently he is unaware that a lot of touting at Randwick for broadcasting purposes is done from houses overlooking the course, and that if pressmen were barred from the tracks that would not prevent the appearance in newspapers of the morning gallops. It would be instructive to him to get hold of the English daily sporting papers, and see what a big feature they make of the gallops at the various tracks.

“The more interest you can get the public to take in racing, the larger the attendances, and the greater the i)rizemoney.

“Furthermore, no matter at what track a horse does a good gallop, the books and punters know. It has never been otherwise, and alteration is improbable."
