Shortage of Men
NAVY AT HONGKONG ENGAGES CHINESE ENGINEERS HONGKONG, JUNE 2. The British Navy in Hong Kong are so short of engine-room artificers that the authorities are going round the colony snatching up every available Chinese mechanic to fill the vacanies. When H.M.S. Medway, parent ship of the Eighth Submarine Flotilla, goes this month to Weihaiwei on the usual summer cruise, she will be reconIditioneid to provide accommodation for 40 additional Chinese E.R.A.’s. Naval etiquette threatens to be sorely tried, as normally an engineroom artificer, who is a petty officer, is senior to a stoker, but the authorities feel that Chinese technicians enjoying seniority on a British warship is hardly the thing. The difficulty will be surmounted by giving the Chinese engineers a peaked cap, and leaving it at that. British stokers will not be expected to sav “Sir” to a Chinese E.R.A.
The present shortage of engine-room artificers is due to the huge rearmament drive which naturally has had Its repercussions on the China Station. Numbers of mechanics and other technicians afloat have, bean called tshore to assist in the naval establishments.
