“Sweeping All Before Them”
CRACK JAPANESE UNITS AT SWATOW Received Thursday, 12.50 a.m. TOKIO, June 21. An Imperial headquarters communique states: “The crack units of the military and naval forces in close co-operation are sweeping all before them. Transports are now proceeding up the river and mechanised units are landing. Japanese warships are within two miles of Swatow. A Japanese Admiralty communique states that naval forces from the South China fleet, Admiral Kondoh commanding, occupied all the islands dominating Swatow. A Hongkong message says several fires have started in Swatow where the warships are bombarding the Chinese positions. Six warships in the harbour and three destroyers up-river prevent the Chinese from reaching the Han River dykes. Foreigners are believed to be safe but the Chinese suffered severely.
