King’s Theatre
“Checkers” and “Back In Circulation” will be screened at the King’s Theatre to-night at 7.45 p.m. and on Friday at 7.45 p.m. Patrons are requested to note that owing to the length of the programme the screening will commence at 7.45 p.m. on Friday instead of 8 p.m. There is wild excitement and cheers as Jane Withers rides down the home stretch in “Checkers,” her newest Twentieth Century-Fox picture, but what will thrill most of all is the grand human story. Jane recently was voted dne of the six most popular stars of today and in this story of galloping hoofs and gallant hearts she’s at her very best. Stuart Erwiu and Una Merkel play the lovebirds in an hilarious seven-year romance. Stuart, as the slickest horse-trader who ever got stung, keynotes his romantic life with the motto: “Love me, love my horse! ” but Una is a girl who refuses to fill her hope chest with horse blankets. When, after the never-say-die courtship, Stuart again pops the question, it’s not a pop—it’s an explosion!
“Back In Circulation” is an engrossing newspaper comedy-drama featuring Pat O’Brien, Joan Blondell and Margaret Lindsay. The plot of the story revolves around the death of a millionaire, discovered by a tabloid newspaper editor (Pat) to have occurred under mysterious circumstances. The editor, aided by his keen woman reporter (Joan), amasses a damaging amount of circumstantial evidence against the widow, and through his printed stories she is brought to trial. Tried and convicted of murder, her
silence and demeanour convinces the girl reporter that the widow is innocent, but ready to go to her doom, shielding someone else. Wifil the aid of a physician (John Litel) who is in love with the condemned woman, the reporter is enabled to gain an explanation, breaking through the widow’s screen of silence to prove the solution of the mystery.
