Eruption » u A DOUBTFUL CONCESSION An unusual point is raised by a remit from the Wairoa Racing Club, to the New Zealand Racing Conference. At present no paid servant of any racing club, including the totalisator staffs, is permitted to race a horse at any meeting in the Dominion. By the deletion of the word “any” in the rule the Wairoa Club desires to confine the restriction to the club at which such person is engaged for payment. If this amendment is allowed, the secretary of a club, for example, would be permitted to own and race horses at any meeting except his own. GRAND NATIONAL MEETING Nominations will close on Friday for the principal events at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Grand National meeting. The races which require attention are the Grand National, Beaufort and Lincoln Steeplechases, Grand National and Sydenham Hurdles and Winter Cup. Dunmanway 8 0 TO TURKEY A few years ago the Soviet Government sent commissioners to England and Ireland to make extensive pur* chases of thoroughbreds stallions and mares. Now report comes from England that the Turkish Government has recently made similar purchases, mainly of brood mares. A consignment all in foal to leading stallions and most of them with foal at foot, recently left Liverpool for Smyrna. It was the largest shipment of its kind ever made from England to Turkey.
