Labour Minister’s Visit
NO. 13 SCHEME EMPLOYMENT ARRANGEMENT WITH WOODVILLE LOCAL BODIES While visiting Woodville on Tuesday the Minister of Labour, Hon. P. C. Webb, called upon the postmaster, Mr. H. H. Little, the district labour registrar, and also conferred with the Mayor (Mr. R. R. Johnston), the town clerk (Mr. D. 8. L. Keay), the Woodville county clerk (Mr. J. M. Graham) and the county engineer (Mt. W. J. Hawkes). Mr. Webb made inquiries concerning the operations of the No. 13 scheme in the Woodville district, and the Mayor informed him that the scheme was working satisfactorily, there being five men employed at present in the borough under it. From the county representatives the Minister sought information regarding the placing of men Cut of seasonal employment, and he was informed that there were four or five. He asked if the local body could absorb them, the borough having had a number employed for some time under No. 13 scheme. The county representatives assured the Minister that subject to the consent of the chairman of tho council (Mr. M. O. Grainger) the men could be placed on various works in the county under tho above scheme. The Minister was assured that the County Council would undertake the transport of the men to and from their work as usual. Certain financial aspects of the scheme wero also discussed.
The county clerk immediately communicated with his chairman and as a result a number of men will be placed in the county under No. 13 scheme next week.
