Solution Kept Secret
The solution of Paramount’s 11 Night of Mystery, 7 7 which is now showing at the Kosy Theatre is so surprising that not even the cast was allowed to read complete scripts. For the first time in the history of motion pictures Philo Vance, in person of Grant Richards, had an opportunity to try his hand at actually solving the Van Dine mystery as the actual culprit was not revealed until the last “shooting” day, when the final sequence was photographed.
Merle Oberon, who admits she is poor in spite of her four-figure weekly salary, made the financial mistake of being domiciled in England as well as the United States, which means, of course, she must pay income tax to both countries. Madeleine Carroll is much smarter. She has turned down all offers to make pictures in England, or to own a house there, and so pays taxes only to the U.S.A.
