Notes of the Day
Cr. A. Campbell (chairman) was granted extended leave of absence at yesterday’s meeting of the Oroua County Council. Cr. Campbell intends to take a holiday visit to Australia this month and in granting him the leave of absence councillors extended to him their very best wishes and bon voyage. At yesterday’s meeting of the Oroua County Council, Cr. R. G. Stewart was granted leave of absence on the eve of a holiday trip to Fiji. Cr. Stewart received the good wishes of councillors for a happy holiday and safe return. Replying to Cr. P. G. Guy at last evening’s meeting of the Feilding Borough Council, the Mayor (Mr. T. L. Seddon) said that there was no immediate prospect of the Council being able to shoulder a share of the cost of sealing Cemetery Road. The question arose out of a letter from the Oroua County Council in reply to the borough’s query, the County Council stating that it was prepared to consider proposals to seal this road provided the borough would share the cost.
It was stated at last evening’s meeting of the Feilding Borough Council that Mr. G. T. Elley, officer in charge of the country library service, would be visiting Feilding on Monday next and it was agreed to endeavour to arrange for Air. Alley to speak at the Community Centre that evening. The proposal to instal a memorial stock drinking trough at Hitchman’s corner was carried a step further at last evening’s meeting of the Feilding Borough Council, when, in reply to the request of the Feilding branch of the Farmers’ Union, the council resolved to supply the water free of charge during the pleasure of the council. Lack of civic pride is accounted as being responsible for the neglect and death oi a number of trees planted in Feilding Streets. The matter was mentioned by Cr. W. W. Andrews at last evening’s meeting of the Feilding Borough Council, when he stated that it was to be regretted that the ratepayers had seen fit to neglect the trees. One householder, he said, had burnt some rubbish alongside one of the trees, which had been scorched. The Mayor (Air. T. L. Seddon) expressed the hope that householders would respect the efforts of citizens in the work of beautifying Feilding streets.
