False Cheque Cashed
FORM FOUND IN CONVERTED CAR AUCKLAND, June 5. A form taken from a cheque book which had been left in a converted motor-car taken from Albert Street, City, on Friday afternoon was presented at the Newton branch of the Union Bank of Australasia near closing time on Saturday morning, the form having been filled in as a cheque for £205, purporting to be signed by the owner of tho missing car, William Corrie Whyte, of Green Lane. At the request of the cashier the man presenting the cheque signed a name and address on the back of the form, corresponding with the name to whom the cheque was allegedly made out. The cashier paid out four £SO notes and a £5 note, noting tho numbers on tho larger notes. Later the matter was reported to the police, and DetectiveSergeant Aplin ascertained that four £SO notes had been cashed into £5 notes at other banks. Late on Saturday night the missing car was found abandoned in the Mount Wellington district. At 3 o’clock yesterday morning Detective-Sergeant Aplin accosted a young man on the Remuera Road, and after interrogation recovered £195 from him. The man was arrested. To-day two suspects were brought before Justices of the Peace in the Police Court. Both were charged with the conversion gf a car valued at £225. The suspect; who was arrested in Remuera Road was charged with knowingly making out a false cheque £or £395 on the Union Bank of Australasia. wit& the intent that it should be acted upon a? genuine. On the application of the police both suspects were remanded until June 12, At tho request Qf the fathers of both young men the Court ordered the names to be not published.
