Arrest Made After Short Struggle
NO INJURY CAUSED United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. LONDON, June 5. A sharp report, believed to be a shot, was fired at the Duchess of Kent as she was leaving her home to attend a cinema. She was uninjured, but a man has been detained.
The incident occurred when the Duchess, accompanied by Lady Portarlington, entered a car outside her home in Belgrave Square. Neither lady was aware of it until they were informed on their return from a West End cinema.
Later messages say it is confirmed that a shot was fired.
Two uniformed police waiting to direct the Royal car heard the report. They grappled with a man nearby and, after a short struggle, took him into ■*ustody.„
Later a sawn-off shotgun was picked up near the Duchess of Kent’s house. It is understood that it contained only one cartridge. The Daily Mirror says that an elderly man was disarmed. He had arrived from Australia only three weeks ago.
