AT RUGBY PARK KONINI DEFEATS HUKANUI VERY UNINTERESTING EXHIBITION Tho day was flno but very cold in Pahiatua on Saturday due to a wind coming off the snow-clad Tararua Ranges, but Rugby Park had a fair number of spectators to witness the senior game between Konini and Hukanui. Play was very dull up to the half-time spell, there being no bright movements at all. Line-outs, scrums and ragged play were the order of the game. Fortunately for the Rugby enthusiasts the second half was better and tries were scored and tho ball played willingly. H. George was in form and kicked for Konini some

very good goals. It was not until late in the second half that the score opened and then when the final whistle went Konini’s lead was 13 to Hukanui’s 6.

The following are the teams: — Konini (blue and red): D. Iveene, G. Smith, E. Hirst, A. Lyall, H. Goorge> M. Harris, B. Berney, A. Mahoney, F. Jensen, C. Brown, T. Verry (captain), A. F. Verrv, E. Brown, M. Connell, B. Smith.

Hukanui (red and white): R. Udy, L. Bartosh, A. Brannigan, J. Corkill, H. Daldy, L. Wenhain, P. Udy, E. Farfeita, R. McGlasher, R. Stevenson, G. Smith, D. Hirst, W. Twentyman (captain), H. Udy, D. Udy; emergencies, G. Udy, L. Leith. W. Ryan refereed.

Konini kicked off and a scrum was ordered ten yards from half-way, the ball was secured by Konini who took play up into Hukanui’s twenty-five. Twentyman picked up and with a long kick sent the leather deep into Konini’s territory. Play was carried on, until a free kick was awarded Hukanui ten yards from the twenty-five mark. Twentyman took a kick at goal but his shot went wide.

Backward and forward play followed until with a series of passes Hukanui were within ten yards of Konini’s goal, but the backs held the attack and the ball was sent downfield. George put a nice kick in and was supported by his forwards who took play within five yards of Hukanui’s goal line but the “reds” were awarded a free kick which saved the situation.

Play was held in midfield for some time and then McGlashen picked up and after a corkscrew run sent a long kick to within a few yards of the line, but the ball went out. From the line-out Konini secured and the leather was taken to the twenty-five line. The following play was very uninteresting and the half-timo whistle went soon afterwards, no score being registered on cither side.

After the oranges Konini were out for business. A free kick w T as awarded them and George placed the ball ten yards on the grandstand side of the twenty-five line mark putting tho ball between tho posts. Konini 3. Hukanui nil. Tho score gave Konini heart and it was not long before T. Verry went across and George converted to bring the score to Konini 8. Hukanui nil. Konini held play in Hukanui’s twenty-five for some little time until B. Berney, sneaking through tho ruck, went across and Goorgo again put a good kick over. Konini 13. llukanui nil. Hukanui now made a dash and a free kick was awarded. From over the twenty-five line Twentyman took a shot at goal to open Hukanui’s score. Konini 13. Hukanui 3. Backward and forward play followed. Hukanui tried hard to break through but Konini’s backs saved the attacks. A minute to go Hukanui were lighting near Konini’s twenty-five line. A scrum was ordered from which Konini secured the ball and the play was taken to halfway. Play became exciting with time near at hand. The ball was picked up by Hukanui and taken right across field finally to B. Udy who finished the movement to bring the Hukanui score to 6. Twentyman failed to convert. Final Score. • Konini 13. Hukanui 6.
