Mineral Deposits Near Nelson

NELSON, May 15. A large Sydney firm is at present interesting itself in the' deposits of dunite, a mineral containing copper, on Dun Mountain. The Nelson City Council considered at its meeting an application for consent to a prospecting license being issued in respect to part of Cawthron Park. During the discussion it was pointed out that Cawthron Park property was under the control of the City Council and was subject to a deed of trust which allowed the council to rent part of the area for mining purposes so long as no serious interference was caused to the use of the park as a public recreation area, and any rentals were to be used for improvements to the park. The city engineer, Mr. J. G. Littlejohn, pointed out that Dun Mountain was part of the catchment area for the Roding River water scheme. The matter was referred to the Reserves Committee for a full investigation before a report was made to the council.
