COMPETITIONS CONCLUDE

Announcement of Cup Winners The Manawatu Competitions Society’s 1939 festival was brought to a conclusion on Saturday with the staging of two demonstration concerts. The even- , ing session was so crowded that a number had to be turned away, as there 1 were no seats left. No better testimony as to the popularity of the festival with the public is needed. During an interval Mr. J. A. Nash, president, returned thanks to the many who had helped to make the festival so successful. He mentioned that the entries, which numbered in the vicinity of 1600, were the largest yet, and that the judges had commented on the improved standard displayed. He then paid a special tribute to the secretary, Mr. K. Chamberlain. The society owed him a debt of gratitude. Mr. Nash recalled that if it had not been for the enthusiasm of Mr. Chamberlain during the depression years the society would have gone into recess. Waning interest had been resuscitated by the work of Mr. Chamberlain. Mr. Nash also paid tribute to the work of the stage manager, Mr. R. C. Bailey, who had been assisted by Mrs. Bailey and Mr. F. Hubbard. A large number of ladies had also helped with the running of the festival, with credit to themselves. Mr. Nash was associated on the stage with the judges and Messrs. E. R. Myers, W. Martin and G. W. Morgan, three past presidents of the Wellington Competitions Society, who had made the journey to Palmerston North to witness the concert. The speaker next paid tribute to the judges and mentioned that next year would witness the centennial festival. Mr. Myers returned thanks for the welcome accorded the Wellington party and congratulated the Manawatu society on its stage management. He said he was envious of the stage facilities in Palmerston North and tho enthusiasm of the public. The society must feel proud at tho measure of support the people of the city and district accorded their efforts. Mr. Nash mentioned a request that had been made for another demonstration concert and said the committee would consider the matter and announce its decision later.

Mr. Barton Ginger returned thanks on behalf of the judges who, he said, were pleased to know that their work had been appreciated. The judges had all been competitors at one time and so tried to be helpful. He also had a word of praise for the stage management.

Mrs. Nash then handed the cups and other trophies to the competitors who had won them, the list being as follows:
