Easy for Primak The hurdles proved a good thing for Primak, who led all the way and scored easily by three lengths from All Blood, with Taumau next. Strolling fell at the first fence, and with a mile covered Primak was going along easily in front, witli All Blood and Taumau next, then Conveyer. The leaders closed up at the far turn but Primak, jumping exceptionally well, drew further away at every fence, eventually winning decisively. All Blood, having his first outing over the hurdles, went well, and Taumau and Conveyer should be all the better for the race. W. J. McDowell, who rode Strolling, again broke the collarbone which was fractured when Hanover came down with him at Ellerslie. Old Surrey Prevails in Exciting Finish Old Surrey was favourite for the open seven and after being prominent from the barrier rise he led into the straight and beat oil challenges by Export, Lord Cavendish and Lady Montana. When they had settled down, War Lap, Aureus and Old Surrey were setting a merry pace ahead of Lord Cavendish and Silver River. Export moved up into fourth place at the three and he followed Old Surrey, Aureus and Lord Cavendish into the straight, where in a great finish Old Surrey stuck on to win by just over a length from Export, with Lord Cavendish a short length further back and a head in front of Lady Montana. Next home were Silver River, War Lap and Rotoma, Meamea Beats Sergia Galteemore was favourite for the Raukawa Handicap but he was beaten into third place, the winner being Meamea, who finished just too well for Sergia. Galteemore set out to make tne pace

but Sergia, Meamea and Rustem were always with him. With five furlongs to go the pace was increased and crossing * the top Sergia joined Galteemore, the r pair turning for home closely attended ' 1 by Meamea and Rustem, and Siegmund and Good Sun. At the distance Sergia 1 was in front but she could not withstand the challenge by Meamea, who 3 won by a short half lengtn. Galteemore - was a similar distance away third and 5 Rustem was fourth. £ Maturity Beats Yed Prior c a Yed Prior and Maturity carried half | the machine in the first division of the maiden race and Maturity was the win- J ner by well over a- length from Yed * Prior, with Peach King, the pacemaker to the straight, in third place. Peach King and Yed Prior were the ' pacemakers running to the straight and J 1 Royal Lassie, Charmante, Te Maari and Maturity were in close attendance. ° Once in line for the, Yed Prior headed 2 Peach King, but went down to Maturity, who finished very well. Haupongi was fourth and Te Maari and Gothic * $ were next. Power Chief’s Steeples ( Power Chief was a short-priced favt ourite for the Steeples and although - Southern Blood headed him twice over * ) the last half-mile, Power Chief won by . a length and with his ears priefied. * There were six starters but only three c . finished the course. Master Hector was 1 pulled up after half a mile when his rider lost both irons at the stand ' double. Ngaitahu ran off first time at the hen coop and Redolent came to grief after five furlongs. This reduced the field to three and Power Chief took charge for the last mile. Southern Blood . ran up to him at the five and, outjumping him, went to the front. Power Chief regained the lead only to lose it ! at the next fence. Alan McDonald then drove Power Chief at the last fence and • although Southern Blood, well ridden by W. E. Pine, made a bold bid for 5

> victory, Power Chief was going along a » length to the good when the judge was reached. Air Flow was 150 yards away. Regicide Beats Wings of Song Regicide, the favourite, finished well to win the second division of the maiden race, and Wings of Song, the pacemaker for most or the way, was only a length away at the finish. The order running to the straight was Wings of Song from Coronado, Parenui, Bourmond, Te Ore, Sir Crusoe and I Master Solway, with Regicide moving forward fast. Regicide was with the leader at the distance and he won nicely. Wings of Song was nearly three lengths in front of Coronado, with Te Ore, Master Solway and Sir Crusoe next. Hinerawe Wins Well Red Chief, Flying Acre and Hinerawe were backed in that order for the middlo-distance hack raco and the winner was Hinerawe, who got through to win decisively from Flying Acre and Dancing Flame. Red Chief was in a

pocket early and he never looked like getting out. Screen Star, Sunbeam, Great Bramble, Flying Acre and Hinerawe were prominent and Hinerawe and Flying Acre were in close attendance on Screen Star and Sunbeam as they turned for home. Then Hinerawe worked to the front and she won from Flying Acre by a couple of lengths, with Dancing Flame a similar distance away third. Golden Orchid was fourth and Titter and Toper were next. Jeanne Wins All the Way The concluding event was, won by Jeanne, who led all the way and beat the fast-finishing Saki by a narrow margin. Jeanne was well clear of Saki as they turned into the straight and there was another gay to Guiding Light, Dorak and Miss Waitarere. Saki was the only one with a chance of catching the leader but Jeauno stuck it out and she won well. Miss Waitarere finished strongly in third place ahead of Guiding Light, then Dorak and War Cloud.
