COMPETITIONS CONCLUDE

Last of Competitive Section

Last evening the final classes in the annual competitions held under the auspices of the Manawatu Competitions Society were run off, leaving for this afternoon and evening the demonstration programmes for which there have already been heavy bookings. The performances yesterday and last night again attracted large entries and tho recitals were listened to by another big audience. At the demonstration concert this evening the championship winners will be announced and the cups and trophies presented. Yesterday’s results were as follow: Dame Melba Scholarship. This contest is beiug held in conjunction with the Wellington Competitions Society, which, at the request of the Director of the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, is holding an elimination contest for New Zealand at its August festival. The scholarship was provided by the late Dame Nellie Melba, aud is held in Melbourne every two years, the next being in February, 1940. The scholarship is valued at £3OO a year for two years, and is open to ladies 17 years aud over. The first prize offered by the Wellington Competitions Society is £4O, covering boat fare aud expenses allowance to enable the winner to compete at Melbourne. The second prizo is £lO. The first holder of the scholarship was an Auckland singer.
