Special Licences for Whisky and Cigarettes
IMPORT CONTROL Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, May 10. Not only Rave full import licences up to previous shipments been granted for whisky and at least two brands eff English cigarettes, but distributors of some other classes of merchandise, either on the prohibited or restricted list of imports for the second half of the year, have been issued licences where no call will be made for a year or more on sterling funds. Some applications for licences where financial arrangements could be made on similar terms have been refused for the reason that the importation of the goods concerned would directly ccme in conflict with the sale of similar classes manufactured within the Dominion.
When the Government announced the concession by which entry of goods could be made into the Dominion there was a great rush among importers for information regarding the scheme. The consequent applications for licences have not, however, teen large in number, and while many imoorters appear to be still negotiating with overseas manufacturers in an endeavour to make the necessary financial arrangements, indications are that participation in the shceme will not be very widespread. In any case, it is recognised that the Government is hardly likely to permit of such a banking up of funds in the Dominion that their subsequent withdrawal would be embarrassing.
