Control of Rugby in Manawatu

MEETING OF MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE FIXTURES FOR SATURDAY Mr. K. W. Eglinton presided at last evening’s meeting of the management committee of the Manawatu Rugby Union. Others present were Messrs. H. R. Crawford, J. R. Hardie, H. Hands, B. Palmer, J. Eagle, E. Clevely, W. Gleeson and G. A. Brown (secretary). Apologies for absence were received from the president (Mr. A. M. Ongley), Messrs. J. A. Colquhoun and A. J. Galpin. Correspondence The secretary of St. Patrick’s Club wrote requesting that members of St. John Ambulance be in attendance after the concluding game at the Showgrounds, expressing the opinion that there was need of their services in dressing open cuts sustained in the oval. The writer added that such service would be gratefully recognised by all players. Mr. Hardie considered it a really good idea and it was resolved, on the motion of Messrs. Crawford and Hands, that it apply to all grounds and that the secretary interview St. John Ambulance with reference to the matter. Kia Toa wrote suggesting that if it was the intention of the union to set up a junior advisory board, that tlie board be formed before the commencement of the foutrh and fifth grade competitions.—The letter was held over until the next meeting, tho secretary, in the meantime, to get copies of rules governing boards functioning in other districts. Kia Toa also suggested that, as it was understood that there were several football films available, it would be in the interests of the game In Manawatu to |>ecure one if considered suitable for instructional purposes. Mr. Hardie said he bad seen one of the pictures and ho said it was of definite instructional value. It was decided to write the Auckland Rugby Union for details concerning the picture.

Kia Toa were granted permission to play a fourth grade match with United next Saturday, and tho question of appointing a referee was left in tho hands of the secretary. The general secretary of tho Palmerston North branch of the Y.W.C.A. wrote inquiring if the union would grant them permission to cater for light refreshments at representative Rugby fixtures, explaining that such catering would be with the object of raising funds for the association.—lt was resolved that the necessary permission be granted and that it apply to all games if the association so wished.

Tho secretary of the Dannevirke Rugby Football Sub-Union wrote suggesting that the annual senior match with Manawatu bo played in Palmerston North on the Saturday of the Winter Show.

Tho chairman remarked that it had been decided to arrange the show match with Wanganui. Mr. Hands explained that until definite word had been received from Wanganui, the Dannevirke letter be held over.—This was agreed to, and the letter will again be considered at next week’s meeting. In regard to the representative programme for 1939, Mr. Hands reviewed the list, and it was resolved to write the various unions to confirm the dates.

The Alanawatu- Wellington representative match will be played at the Showgrounds on June 5, and an endeavour is to be made to arrange for a curtainraiser between Palmerston North High School and Feilding High School. The matter of holding the seven-a-side tournament was deferred.

In regard to the classification of players in the Massey College junior and third grade teams, which will take the field next Saturday, the chairman, Mr. Hardie and the secretary were appointed a sub-committee to consider names put forward for re-classification. The secretary of the New Zealand Rugby Union forwarded a copy of remits which have been considered by the council and which are to be submitted to the London Conference. The writer added that, if Alanawatu had any comments to make, they should be sent forward not later than June 8.

Speaking of the Park Road ground, Mr. Eagle remarked that the spectators encroached on the playing area near the stand and that the union could well consider the erection of a barrier. Air. Hardie added there would be need for a fence there on June 10, when the senior games would be played at Rugby Park. The chairman observed that St. Patrick's were well satisfied with Park Road as a training ground and that it would not be right to erect a fence that would be an obstruction on the training area. It was finally decided that the matter be referred to the grounds committee. FIXTURES FOR SATURDAY Fixtures, grounds and referees for Saturday were approved as under:— Senior Grade United v.
