Annual Festival YESTERDAY’S AWARDS The 1939 annual festival of the Manawatu Competitions Society was continued yesterday, much interest being taken in the various classes during the morning and afternoon, and a large audience gathering at the Opera House in the evening, when an excellent programme was offered. Additional awards are as follow: — Dancing. Character or demi-character, under 8: Norma Tucker (Palmerston North) 1, Peggy Snelling (Palmerston North) 2, Anne Powell (Palmerston North) h.c.; 14 entries. Character story dance, under 14: Lorna Senter (Palmerston North) 1, Patricia Davis (Wanganui) 2; seven entries. Operatic dance, 16 and over: Miss Lorraine Major (Palmerston North) 1, Miss Ngaire Keys (Wellington) 2; nine entries. Sword dance, under 10: Nancye Conway (Palmerston North) 1, Florence Woodroofe (Palmerston North) 2, Doreen Tyley (Palmerston North) and Ruth McDowall (Palmerston North) equal 3, Janet Henderson (Palmerston North) and Patty Miller (Hastings) v.h.c.; 12 entries.

Operatic dance, under 10: Patricia Knighton (Wellington) 1, Anne Williams (Palmerston North) 2, Beverley Wilson (Palmerston North) v.h.c., Carol Humphrey (Palmerston North) and June Rhodes (Wellington) h.c.; 46 entries.

A really good section, very interesting to judge, said the judge. The interpretation was good throughout and the technique was fairly good. Operatic test dance, under 13: Pauline Matthews (Wellington) 1, Therese Griffin (Wanganui) 2, Lorna Senter (Palmerston North) and Cherry Potbury (Palmerston North) 3, Audrey Wilton (Palmerston North) v.h.c., Shirley Webster (Wanganui) h.c.; 29 entries. The winner did every step correctly and was most artistic, said the judge. The second girl was not quite right in just one step.

Skipping dance, 14 and over: Ivena Pothan (Hastings) 1, Dorothy McLean (Palmerston North) 2, Hetty Jenkins (Palmerston North), Zoe Bailey (Palmerston North) and Isa McKenzie (Palmerston North) v.h.c.; 12 entries. Reel o’ Tulloch, under 17: Dorothy McLean (Palmerston North) 1, Noleen Wilkins (Onga Onga) 2, Yvonne Nicholson (Palmerston North) 3. A small section but each competitor gave an excellent performance, said the judge. The timing was especially good.

Piano duet, under 10: Mary Andis and Jacqueline Mason (Palmerston North) and lona Semple and Graham Edwards (Shannon) equal 2; three entries. No first award.

Piano solo, 10 and under 12: Dulcie Walker (Palmerston North) 1, Mavis Faulding (Milson) 2, Dorothy Stevens (Palmerston North) and William Brabyn (Feilding) 3, Joan Bigham (Palmerston North) and Shirley Melton (Palmerston North) v.h.c.; 12 entries. Recital with musical accompaniment, women: Miss Ivena Pothan (Hastings) 1, Miss Gladys Tomkins (Wanganui) 2, Miss Agnes Upton (Hastings) 3; four entries. Vocal. Tho judge said it was a good class with the singing not quite up to Monday's standard. Young girls must not force their voices. Many are irreparably ruined through this bad fault. Vocal solo, boys, 12 and under 16: Jeffrey Stewart (Wellington) 1, Brian Hasler (Hastings) 2, Alan Welch (Maugamaire) v.h.c.; five entries. Vocal solo, women (New Zealand composer): Miss Joan Bovis (Palmerston North) 3, Miss Marjorie Clifford (Wellington) 2, Miss Cora Taylor (Hamilton) and Miss Rita Bull (Palmerston North) equal 3. The singing was not of a high standard, said the judge, who was disappointed. The diction right through this class was very good, commented the judge. Some of the competitors selected recitations in. advance of their years. The three placel competitors did excellent work.
