TOPICS of the TURF

Power Chief Jumps the Country FAST SIX BY OLD SURREY INTERESTING PROGRAMME AT AWAPUNI YESTERDAY With the Otaki, Manawatu and Foxton meetings following each other in quick succession, the track work at Awapuni is becoming increasingly interesting. Yesterday, despite the fact that the centre was well represented at Hawera, there was plenty of fast work and the course proper, with the flags out in the middle, was available. The fastest six of the morning was recorded by Old Surrey and Power Chief, a winner at Hawera, gave a splendid exhibition of jumping over the country, negotiating four brush fences and two post and rails.

Among the first to work were Man* teau and Malik Kafur and they were timed to run three in 39. They are coming to hand well. Warehi (Kilmister) with an advantage in weight, finished in front of Sunbeam (G. B. Tattersall) at the end of seven, the last six taking 1.23. Tattersall will ride Sunbeam at Otaki.

Snigger (Tattersall) held a slight advantage over Colonel Bogey (W. J. Brougnton) over six run in 1.21. Snigger looks well at present.

Thrasos and Girl Pat were timed to run six in 1.21, and Tom Tom (Broughton) maintained an even pace over six in 1.22.

The Crooner (E. Ireland), looking a picture, sprinted three with Eaeburu (A. McDonald) and they finished together in 39 1-5. Corroboreo (E. Stewart) was not required to do his best over seven furlongs, but he was going very easily at the finish after taking 1.35. Tidal Gift (J. Chaplin) and Colibri (Broughton) were together at the end of four in 54, and Wildfiower (Williamson) was held back to Eollaway (Tattersall) in a half-mile flutter which occupied 55. Wildfiower looks to be none tho worse for the racing she had at Hawera.

Old Surrey (Ireland) had Bumble (light boy) as a companion and with the former setting the pace they ran to the three in 39. At the finish Old Surrey was being eased up, but his time for the full distance was 1.19 3-5.

Among those restricted to pace work were Brazil, Golden Eidge and Diamond Cutter, while Erebus, none the worse for his fall at Hawera, was given a couple of rounds at better than halfpace.

Guiding Light (Tattersall) was eager to gallop in her task over six furlongs, but she was under a good hold and she ran tho distance easily in 1.22. She looks to be in good order for Otaki where she will be ridden by Tattersall. Catalogue (A. McDonald), who is not far from his top form, was worked over seven and after running the first four in 56 he came home in 39 to complete in 1.37.

White Gold (Ireland) galloped an easy six on the plough, being timed to run the last five in 1.6 1-5. There were several bouts over the schooling fences and the best was probably that of Eoyal Choice (W. J. McDowell) and Conveyer (A. McDonald). It was over four flights and Royal Choice jumped particularly well. Conveyer appeared to take his fences very carefully and he, also, gave a sound exhibition.

Taurnau (W. E. Pine) made light work of three hurdles, jumping really well. Taurnau, Strolling, Conveyer and All Blood give Awapuni a strong hand in the hurdles at Otaki. Power Chief has been entered for the steeplechase and yesterday with W. E. Pine in tho saddle, he was put over the country, jumping four brush fences and two post and rails in great style. Power Chief should do well during the winter. Kena and Paxena arrived at Awapuni on Sunday and they will remain at this centre until after the Poxton meeting. Paxena changed hands at Hawera and she is now owned by Mr. G. Gardiner, of Te Aroha.
