Ministerial. On his way to Auckland to attend the Anzac ceremony in that city and also to inspect several factories, the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, passed through Palmerston North on the Limited last evening. He was greeted at the station by a number of friends and well wishers. Mr. T. P. Pain, deputy-registrar of the Supreme Court in Dunedin, has been appointed registrar at Whangarei. The death has occurred of Sir William Ramsay, Professor of Humanity at Aberdeen University, from 1886 till 1911, aged 88, states a cable messsage from London. Captain G. G. Thorne, R.D., R.N.R., commanding the liner Orcades, has been appointed an A.D.C. to the King, according to advice received by the Orient Line.
The death has occurred of Dr. Alexander Barton, aged 78, the designer of England’s first airship in 3 903 and of the world’s first hydroplane in 1935, states a cablegram from Loudon. Be was the first carrier of air mail by balloon to France in 1902 and played a part in King Edward Vll’s coronation celebrations.
A London cablegram records lhe death of Mr. Herman Finck, conductor aud composer. Herman Finck, composer and conductor, was born in London in 3869 and began his career in a theatrical orchestra at the age of fourteen. He studied music under his father and also at the Guildhall School of Music. He was associated with the Palace Theatre from its opening in 1892, when he was engaged as pianist, and subsequently, as a violinist, he became leader and assistant conductor under Alfred Plumpton. In 1900, he was appointed musical director and held that position for 20 years, after which he was at the Queen’s Theatre and the Drury Lane Theatre. He wrote incidental music for a host of productions, some of the bestknown being “The Passing Show,” of 1915 and 1916, the “1919 Victory Revue,” “La Carmeucita,’’ “The Swiss Maid” and “Wildfire.” His “In the Shadows” and “Pot Pourri” have been very popular.
