SEASON OPENS SUCCESSFULLY On Saturday afternoon the Mayor, Mr. T. L. Seddon, officially opened the 1939 season for the newly formed Feilding Harriers' Club. There was au attendance of about thirty runners drawn from Marton, Feilding and Palmerston North districts, as was a largo gathering of interested spectators. Addressing the assemblage, the Mayor welcomed all visiting runners, remarking that it was many years since a club of this type had functioned in Feilding and -expressed his pleasure at the initiative behind the reorganisation in the town of a sport from which much value is derived by members. The Mayor continued that in keeping with the Government policy of fostering national health he, as a chairman of a committee with this aim, would be glad to report to the Minister on the part towards reaching this objective which was being played in Feilding. Mr. Seddon concluded by extending to the club best wishes for a successful season and for its future prosperity. Supporters eagerly witnessed the start of the run, cheers being given for the Mayor and the visitors participating. After covering three and a-half miles the harriers came into Aorangi Road, the run-in over the last 500 yards causing much excitement to result as follows: G. McVicar 1, G. Annear 2, A. Officials and runners were afterwards entertained at afternoon tea, during the course of which the president of the Marton Club, Mr. Dashwood, said time had arrived for a harrier organisation in. Feilding. He suggested that the club should hold an open relay race from Marton to Feilding, this to be an annual event. This proposition was supported by runners. Mr. Dashwood extended a hearty invitation to the Feilding Club members to be present at the official opening of the West Coast Harriers being held at Marton on May 6, and thanked the club for their invitation to their opening ceremony. The president of the Palmerston North Club, Mr. Eagle, wished the club many happy returns of its first birthday, saying that in 20 years hence tho opening day of the Feilding Harriers' Club would be looked back on as the commencement of a successful organisation.
