Women’s Institutes
OPIKI The first meeting of the seventh year of the Opiki Women’s Institute was held on Wednesday, with Miss C. Cook-' sley presiding over a good attendance! of members and visitors. Apologies for absence were received from Mrs. A. E. f White and Mrs. G. G. Yule. Mrs. Red-| mond, of Pahiatua, Mrs. Cranfield, of Woodville, and Mrs. J. Smith, of Tokomaru, were welcomed as visitors. It was proposed and agreed that the excellent work of Mrs. B. A. Norman, past president, be placed on record. Invitations for members to attend birthday celebrations were received from Tiakitahuna on April 19, Rangiotu on April 28, and Tokomaru on May 9. The following new members were elected: Mrs. L. Vile, and Misses F. Carson, R. Vile and W. Pond. The hope was expressed that they would enjoy their association with the institute. Arrangements were made for the birthday, which will be held this year on the evening of May 18. A vote thanks carried by acclamation was accorded Mrs. L. T. Webb, who has made the birthday cake. Mrs. P. H. Krivan has very kindly offered to ice and decorate the cake and Mrs. W. Jackson has donated the ingredients for same. Final arrangements for the birthday evening were left in the hands of the committee. It was decided to purchase two dozen cups and saucers for institute meeting day use only. As one of its efforts to celebrate, if only in a small way, the centennial of New Zealand in 1940, the meoting approved of the idea of an autographed table cloth. This 1 would be a community effort by all ( members. Mrs. T. D. Lynch, a member < of the former North Wellington execu-j tive, gave a talk on matters pertaining 1 to the Women’s Institute movement.' This was appreciated and thanks were corfVeyed in the usual way. Afternoon tea was served buffet style in the supper room by the hostesses, Mesdames P. R. Krivan, B. A. Norman, G. J. Wilde and L. T. Webb. Tho tables were gay with vases of flowers in autumn tonings. Mrs. G. J. It was decided to make a social afternoon at the next month’s : meeting to celebrate the birthday. Ar- ■ rangements were entered into for tho ] shop window display at the winter ;
show in June. It was decided to enter two displays, one for needlework and the other a baker’s shop. Members decided to contribute towards buying the birthday cake. An invitation was received from the Oroua Downs Institute for the birthday. Mesdames C. Hamlin and Larsen kindly judged the buttonholes find sauce, while Mrs. Larsen judged the garden blooms. Mrs. Hamlin judged the scones for Mrs. Vallend’er’s trophy, which resulted: Mrs. Lawlor 1, Mrs. Grayson 2, Mrs. Carter 3 (18 entries); buttonholes, Mrs. Vallender 1, Mrs. O’Connor 2, Mrs. Davey 3 (eight entries); bloom, Mrs. Saunders 1, Mrs. H. Hamlin 2, Mrs. Davey 3 (14 euries). Hostesses were Mesdames Parlane, Webb, Davey and T. Scott. Competitions for next month: Dundee cake from institute cookery cook and satin cushin (any satin but no faneywork); hostesses, Mesdames Angus, Amphlett, Barnaby, Bailey.
