Kairanga Roads and Bridges

LOAN FOR IMPROVEMENTS SUGGESTED Tho raising of a loan 'for effecting permanent improvements to major roads still unsurfaced is at present under consideration by the Kairanga County Council. A report presented to the monthly meeting of the council yesterday by the engineer (Mr. L. C. Pickering) revealed 17£ miles of roads in this category, and estimating the cost at £2400 a mile for a 20-foot wide firstclass sealed road, the annual charges, based on a 12-year term (the only one available for this class of work) with interest at 41 per cent, and a sinking fund of £G 17s per cent., would be £266 per mile, as compared with the present maintenance cost of from £BO to £ISO per mile. It was also reported that 15 major bridges would require replacement within the next eight years, the total cost of rebuilding being estimated at in the vicinity of £30,000.

Tho council decided to study the report and consider it at the next meeting of the council.
