GENERAL WORK IN STREETS AND SERVICES The borough foreman, Mr. L. Groun, reported as follows to the council meeting on Thursday evening:— March 13 I commenced duties and inspected intake, pipe line and reservoir. 'Tanks measured: Small 9ft. 9in., large Oft. Inspected treatment works and found buckets not working correctly and have had them adjusted. All water connections across Yogel Street in excavated area have been renewed with copper pipes and connections to old pelting wheels have been cut off. Spoil has t>een carted from drains and metal carted to fill both water and gas drains. Fireplugs have been cleaned of weeds and Sowry Road, Gladstone Street, Grey Street, Station Street, Ross Street, Ormond Street, Pollen Street and McLean Street have been graded. Meters have been read and some have no reading. During Easter the Jire hose was used on Vogel Street for six hours and the water supply shows a drop of three inches in one tank. There has been one funeral during the month. The cemetery has been cleaned up and the paths cut with mower, also new pegs have been put in. Fountainc Square and Recreation Ground have been kept mowed and paths weeded, have men on cutting hedge at Recreation Ground now. I have started sewer connections to State houses and will have them completed as soon as contractor is ready. Health inspector advises fisli and other wet rubbish to be removed twice
per week and a lock and key on gate at dump. There are a lot of complaints about stock on roads in borough. The clerk, Mr. D. Keay, reported that during the month the following licenses have been issued:—Duplicate driver's 1, heavy traffic 4, dogs 29, building permits 8, plumbing fees 2. Receipts totalled £1958 I7s Id, including an instalment from the gasworks depreciation fund und payments were £1277 2s Cd. Mr. \V. C. H. Petteisou, the gasworks manager, reported that 10 tons of coal had been carbonised to produce 174,520 feet of gas of which only 6120 feet were unaccounted for. The sales for the month were: Gas £9l 2s, tar Os, coke £8 4s Od, fittings 2s. The reduction in the unaccounted for gas was favourably commented upon ly councillors.
