Japanese Advance Towards British Frontier
FRESH LANDING EFFECTED United Press Association.—Bv Eleetrlo Telegraph.—Copyright. Received Tuesday, 8.20 p.m. HONG KONG, April 11. Japanese troops have landed at Deep Bay and are advancing to the Hong Kong frontier. The Japanese lauded on the coast four miles north of British territory and are reported to he advancing to Deepwater Bay, adjacent to the British frontier. CHINESE ASSUME INITIATIVE OFFENSIVE ON ALL FRONTS LONDON, April 10. The Shanghai correspondent of The Times says it is officially announced that General Chiang Kai-shek’s longprepared offensive has been launched on all fronts in the hope of wresting the initiative from the Japanese. Guerrilla activities are being intensified behind the Japanese lines. The Japanese arc making air raids on a wide scale. They bombed Nanking and Sian, and shot down a heavy Chiueso bomber which reaoued 250 miles north of Shanghai. The Tientsin correspondent of The Times says that an unknown Chinese dressed in foreign clothes shot dead Mr. Chen Licn-shih, Superintendent of Customs.
A stray bullet killed Mr. Charles Glauser, a Swiss engineer, and a Tartar athlete, Talaat Mansoureff, was seriously injured when he attacked the assailant before tho latter escaped. A Shanghai message says the Japanese detained teu ships, nine of which were flying the Portuguese flag, in order to examine their registration papers. The Japanese alleged that Chinese owners aro running their vessels under foreign flags. Forty-one Chinese who were found guilty of terrorism and looting in Canton were killed by the Japanese in a mass execution.
