Women’s Institutes

NEWBURY The Newbury Women’s Institute held the annual meeting at the local hall, there being a very good attendance, Mrs. E. Shaw presiding and welcoming as visitors from Rongotea Mrs. A. J. Will and Mrs. Sandereock, Mrs. Olliver from Woodville, also six new members. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames J. Linklater, C. Collins. H. Lovelock, C. Bain, M. Burberry aud J. Maiden. Resignations were received with regret from Mrs. M. Baker, Mrs, R. Purton and Mrs. Noel Wood. The secretary and treasurer (Mrs. A. K. Simpson) read the report and balaneoj sheet, which showed the institute to be I in a good financial position, after donating to the hall committee stage curtains, which are a great improvement. Before the election, Mrs. E. Shaw thanked everyone who had helped to make the institute a success and expressed the hope that they would continue to have happy and succesful meetings. Mrs. Shaw and Mrs. Simpson wore presented with beautiful shoulder sprays by Mrs. S. Death from the members, the recipients returning thanks l’or such kindly thoughts. Mrs. Shaw presented Mrs. Simpson with an Easter posy in appreciation of her good work. Mrs. Wills (Rongotea) kindly took the chair during the afternoon. Mrs. Shaw was unanimously re-elected president, Mesdames F. Verry, J. Linklater and J. Lancaster vice-presidents, Mrs. Simpson re-elected secretary and treasurer. Members of the committee are Mesdames J. Macauley, G. Gore, W. Penberthy, S. Death, M. Hansen and C. Cameron. The competition for the monthly meeting (Madeira cake) resulted; Mrs. W. Penberthy 1, Mrs. G. Lancaster 2, Mrs. F. Verry 3. Best flower: Mr. M. Hansen 1, Mrs. E. Shaw 2, Mrs. W. Penberthy 3. Tho points prize for tho past year was won by Mrs. E. Shaw and for tho best flower for six months by Mrs. F. Verry. The competition for April will be for the best jar of apple jelly and a bottle of mustard pickle. The hostesses will be Mesdames Lovelock and Linklater. Mrs. Will was presented with a shoulder Spray, and as Mrs. Will is going to visit the Institute link in Surrey, j)ngland, she was asked to convey greetings and best wishes from Newbury fellow members. Mrs. Will expressed great pleasure at being able to do so, and hoped oh her return to give new ideas from the link overseas. Mrs. Sandereock, who is alo going to the conference, was presented with a spray, also Mrs. Olliver who gave a demonstration on making woollen mops. The members and friends of the New*

bury Institute held a most enjoyable picnic at the Esplanade last -week, the day being beautifully fine and everything going with a swing. After luncheon a sports programme was held and the following w'ere the winners: Writ ten competition film stars (children)), Mrs. J. Macauley 1, Mrs. J. Lancaster 2; potato race, Mrs. Ilealy 1, Miss Lorna Verry 2, chain stepping (ladies), Mrs. H. Lovelock 1, Mrs. J. Macauley 2; men, Mr. W. Penberthy 1, Mr. C. Collins 2; balloon blowing, Mrs. J. Macauley I, Mrs. J. Lancaster 2, Miss Lorna Verry 3; Mrs. E. Shaw’s consolation prize, men, Mr. Penberthy 3, Mr. C. Collins 2; Mr. J. Lancaster’s consolation, men’s potato race, Mr. F. Verry 1; musical stick, Mrs. J. Macauley 3, Mrs. J. Linklater 2; word-find-ing competition, Mrs. A. Simpson 1, Mrs. Strickland 2; lucky cup, Mrs. B. Wilton 1; children’s race, Dorothy Lancaster 1, Nancy Collins 2, Colin Cameron 3. At the conclusion of the sports afternoon tea on the lawn was enjoyed.

The first annual committee meetirt£ was held and Mrs. E. Shaw presided. Apologies were received from Mesdames S. Death and M. Hansen, J. Lancaster and C. Cameron. Mesdames F. Verry and E. Shaw were appointed delegates to the Wellington Federation meeting to be held in Palmerston North and a suggestion for the next three months’ programme wa drawn up. It |wa decided to hold a concert at some future date in aid of funds.
