Womens Christian Temperance Union

REPORT ON CONVENTION In the absence of Miss C. Jamieson owing to a bereavement, Mrs. * E. A. Collins presided at the monthly meeting of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, which was held yesterday ni ternoon in the Baptist Halt The opening devotional exercises were conducted by Mrs. Shearman, tho pianist for the opening hymn being Miss L. C. Thompson. The scientific fact for the day was given by Miss Sutherland. A financial statement of. the recent fair was given by Miss Thompson, members expressing gratification at the splendid result. A comprehensive roport of tho annual convention held recently in Wellington was given by Mrs. E. Carter. All officers of the past year had been reelected, with the addition of an assistant treasurer to cope with the increasing amount of work being undertaken by the union, said the speaker. This, and the largo number of young people present, were regarded as indications that tho movement was making good progress. A number of minor points in connection with the conducting of the monthly meetings were settled. An enjoyable day had been spent sight-see-ing round tho bays, as a break from the business meetings of the convention. It was reported that Sister Dobbio had been able to build three halls with the funds received from the sale of left-off clothing, and this was regarded as being very creditable. Mrs. Carter read a number of helpful hints on furthering the work and improving the monthly meetings. The flowers used for decoration had been grown from seed distributed at last year’s convention. The Manawatu district had this year sent 12 delegates, compared with six last year, yet another indication of tho progress made. Mrs. Carter was thanked for her interesting report by Mrs. Collins, members showing their appreciation by applauso. Afternoon tea was served by Mrs. Stenburg and Miss Sutherland. The meeting closed with the benediction.
