lan Hay’s “ Housemaster ” Cleverly Contrived
COMEDY PREDOMINANT IN BRITISH STORY (Regent: Coming soon.) Adopted from the lan Hay play, “Housemaster” is one of the best and brightest films to come from British studios. Its story, although comedy is predominant, is human and sympathetic, and is cleverly contrived. It features such front-rank players as Otto Kruger, Dianna Churchill, Phillips Holmes and Rene Ray. It tells the story of a middle-aged housemaster, devoted to his boys, who Gnds that the newly-appointed headmaster is gradually trying to make him resign. Matters are made worse when his three charming but irresponsible wards descend upon the school, upsetting all routine and almost causing a mutiny'. Otto Kruger has the role of tho lovable housemaster, who nearly has his life-work taken away from him. Diana Churchill, remembered by her sympathetic portrayal of the young wife in “The Dominant Sex,” has tho part of the eldest of the three words, and Rene Ray and Rosamond Barnes arc her liiUdcap sisters. A charming romance enters the story with tlic young science master (Phillips Holmes) falling in love with Diana, while one of the boys (John Wood) finds Rcnc Ray’s bright eyes attractive.
Bing Crosby, whose latest picture for Paramount, “Paris Honeymoon,” ik about to be released, has just been informed that his latest Decca record had broken tho all-time sales record of that company’s product. The record, “Mexicali Rose,” which Biug made with John Scott Trotter and his orchestra sold 00,000 copies in America in the first two weeks of its .release and has now passed tlic 200,000 mark. Who said Bing wasn’t popular?
