”1 would like to make it public that this board strongly discountenances corporal punishment in our schools,” said the chairman of the Southland Education Board (Mr. S. Rice) at the annual meeting. “This fact is well known by our teachers, who, by the regulations, are required to keep a punishment register. Such a thing as punishing a child for inability to do its lessons is forbidden, and only in cases of wilful disobedience or real wickedness is corporal punishment administered. I am prompted to make this statement by a letter received by me this week, and we endorse the action of the Otago Education Board in urging other Education Boards to adopt a resolution forbidding corporal punlsnment foi school work and granting the right t headmasters to punish only in cases oi gross misconduct.”
