SANTA ANITA HANDICAP WON BY KAYAK II WAGERING BEAT ALL .RECORDS ARCADIA (California), March 4. Before a record crowd of 05,000, including scores of cinema notables, the Santa Anita meeting reached its climax to-day, when the following was the result of the SANTA ANITA HANDICAP, a sweepstakes with 100,000dol. added; IJ miles. IvAYAK 11, 7.12 (Ralph Neves) .. 1 Whichcee, 8.0 2 Main Man, 8.5 o Kayak II is from the same stable as Seabiscuit. The winner's share of the stake was 91,000 dollars, the second horse's 20,000 dollars, and the third horse’s 10,000 dollars. Kayak II won by a length and a-half after a gallant challenge down the straight, and he set a new track record by running the distance in 2.1 2-5. The wagering broke all records for the course, 1,700,000 dollars passing through the parimutuels during the day, with 370,000 dollars on the feature race alone. DAINTY SUB WAS UNLUCKY Three furlongs from home in the Rangitikei Cup Dainty Sue was last and she was still there as the Held swept into the straight. They were bunched and stretched well over on the course below the distance and it was not until near the post that Dainty Suo received the opening she was compelled to wait for. Then she iinished brilliantly and she was only a neck away from the hard-ridden Peerless at the finish. PROM A BRILLIANT MARE Tho first of Princess Doreen's progeny has arrived at Riccarton to be trained by T. H. Gillefc for Mr. E. Ilay. This is a chestnut yearling filly by Iliad. She is well-grown, and on appearances and breeding should make a smart galloper. Princess Doroeen, now at the Elderslie Stud, has a chestnut foal by Solicitor-General, and is in foal again to the same sire. BROTHER TO HIGH CASTE A yearling bother to High Caste, by Bulandshar from The Begum, is now located at iR. iS. Bagby’s stable at Ellerslie. This youngster resembles his halfbrother, and is a well-grown colt. NEW BARRIER FOR AWAPUNI. Tho committee of the Manawatu Racing Club have decided to install a quicker release barrier than the one that has been in use for many years. An order has beeu placed in Auckland fot the installation of the “Henry" machine, which is at present in use on the Ellerslie racecourse, and last season was adopted at Paeroa by the Ohinemuri Jockey Club. McKenzie, was thrown. McKenzie suffered severe bruises and was unablo to ride for the rest of the day. TO RIDE IN -INGLAND The lightweight horseman N. Vaughan will leave Wellington for England by the Rangitikei on Thursday. Vaughan, who will be accompanied by his father, has been engaged to ride for the Hon. G. Lambton and, as he can go to scale at 7.0, ho should not lack for opportunities.
