United Football Club
1938 SEASON REVIEWED The annual report of the United Football Club records that the 1938 season was probably the most successful since the club’s inception in 1930. Four teams were entered in the competitions. The senoir fifteen, comprised of four of tho previous season’s third grade players, seven juniors and only four who had previously played senior football, proved the surprise packet of the competition. Out of seven teams entered in the competition they finished fourth on the ladder and, after playing excellent % football throughout, were successful in winning the sudden-death competition. The thanks of the club are due to "Lou" Findlay for his untiring efforts in coaching and leading this team. Although it started off very shakily, winning only one game out of the first six, the juaior team ably held together and, coached by "Stan" Biel, won eight of their next ten games and eventually finished third on the ladder. Next season should be a most successful one for the juniors as they have some very promising boys, many of whom will be contesting places in the higher grade. The thirds performed very creditably and were runners-up in the competition. Some of the boys showed distinct promise and if the club continues to pursue its policy of catering for the lower grades it need entertain no fears for the future well-being of the club. Mr. E. Findlay proved a popular and energetic coach. The fourth grade team had an enjoyable and successful season. They played Kia Toa in the final but had to be content with a 3-all draw when needing an outright win to take the competition. Throughout the season all teams were at full strength. The club finished third in the Abraham Cup competition for most points in all grades and as each grade is capable of improvement, better positions in 1939 are looked forward to. Tlie finances of the club are the most satisfactory for some years. The D. N. Davis Shield for the athletic champion of the club was won by H. Temperton for the second year in succession. Temperton's was a magnificent performance as he secured 28 points out of a possible 30. The Tunner-up in the athletic championship (R. Field's medal) was M. Luxmore. The Mounsey's, Ltd., Cup for annual competition, awarded to the grade scoring most points in championship series, was held by the third grade team (N. Pratt, caption). Senior trophies, R. Hyde and M. Luxmore; junior trophies, E. Hubbard and T. Hughes; third grade trophies, P. Collins and N. Pratt; fouth grade trophy, J. Wallace.
A proposal has been made that, in conjunction with the United Cricket Club, a United Sports' Club be formed with the object of promoting sport in selected branches. Delegates from the football club met delegates from the cricket club and, at that meeting, it was decided to place the proposal before the anual meeting of the football club.
