Antarctic Empire
LONDON, Jan. 26. About 2800 miles, or oue-lifth of the entire South Polar coast, and an area of 1,079,400 square miles, have been added to tho territory of Norway by her recent annexation of the Atlantic Sector in tho Antarctic. The purpose of the annexation is to protect Norway's whalo fishing interests. The new land lies between 20 degrees west and 45 degrees east, and comprises Crown Princess Martha Land, Princess Astrid Land, Princess iTagnhild Land and Crown Prince Olaf Land. One of the reasons for Norway’s annexation of tho Atlantic Sector is to avoid the additional license charges that would have had to bo paid if tho land there had been annexed by another country. , The Antarctic mainland has not been fully explored, but it is believed to be about 5,550,000 square miles in extent, compared with Europe's 3,860,000 square miles.
Since 1908, Britain has occupied 3,579,000 square miles, with 7400 miles of coastline.
