Physical Fitness Week

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —Might I be favoured with space to set out the arrangements for Physical Fitness Week which commences today, the 18th inst., and ends on Saturday, 25th inst., and to invite the support and co-operation of everyone, young and old, in the whole district to ensure the planting of the seed of getting fit and keeping lit. The detailed programme is as follows: Saturday, February IS: 2 p.m., North v. South cricket match at Mangamaire; Scout demonstration at St. Peter’s vicarage.

Sunday, February 19: 10.30 a.m., church parade, Garden Square; 7 p.m., family service.

Monday, February 20: 1.15 p.m., school swimming sports; 5.30-6 p.m., Business Men’s Gym at baths.

Tuesday, February 21: 10.15 a.m., town pupils attend special picture programme, King’s Theatre; 2 p.m., country schools attend pictures; 5.30-6 p.m., Business Men’s Gym at baths. Wednesday, February 22: 12.45 p.m., luncheon at Commercial Hotel, guest and speaker, Mr. Amos McKegg, Palmerston North, featuring all colour films on his trip through America; 2.30 p.m., cricket match, Tahiatua Borough Council v. Fahiatua County Council; 5.30-6 p.m., Business Meji’s Gym at baths; 6 p.m., cycling sports at Recreation Ground.

Thursday, February 23: 10 a.m., school sports carnival, Recreation Grounds; 2.30 p.m., cricket match, school pupils v. parents; 5.30 p.m.6 p.m. Business Men’s Gym at baths; 8 p.m., Drill Hall monster exhibition of gymnastics, tumbling and wrestling by Masterton Y.M.C.A. and* Wrestling Club.

Friday, February 24: 2 p.m., school tennis tournament, grass courts. Saturday, February 25: 2 p.m., monBter swimming carnival at Municipal Baths.

While I do hope that wholehearted interest will be taken in each and every item arranged, thore are somo which require special mention. All local bodies, friendly societies, sporting bodies; in fact, every organisation whatsoever, are particularly invited to participate in the monster church parade arranged for to-morrow, Sunday, at 10 a.m. sharp. Anglicans will assemble in Tui Street facing west by the King ’3 Theatre, Presbyterians will assemble in Main Street facing south in front of the Commercial Hotel. Methodists and Salvationists will combine and assemble in Main Street facing south in front of Hannah’s buildings. Each separate parade will march off at 10.45 a.m. sharp for its separate church. Roman Catholics are specially invited to attend Mass at 9 a.m. sharp and again the family service at 7 p.m., which will bo held in every church, when sons arc requested to accompany fathers and the daughters their mothers. One can onlyhope that this request will be acceded to by ono and all, and I feel it is asking very little sacrifice of anyone to give up this one Sunday for public worship. With regard to the luncheon at the Commercial Hotel on Wednesday noxt, in view of their popularity in the past, there is little need for me to recommend it. Knowing Mr. Amos McKegg, I need only assure those that will be there, of a most interesting and enjoyable discourse on his recent trip through America. Mr. McKegg will be exhibiting his own all-colour films taken by him during his trip.

Finally, might I be permitted to draw the attention of the whole district to the display of gymnastics, tumbling and wrestling to bo held at the Drill Hall on Thursday next at 8 p.m. Through the efforts of Mr. Price, several carloads of the Masterton Y.M.C.A. and Wrestling Club, are making a special trip to Pahiatua ter provide this exhibition, and I look forward to generous public support in appreciation of the assistance these visitors will be giving to ensure the success of our local undertakings in connection with Physical Fitness Week.

In conclusion, might I point out that the idea behind the Government’s scheme is not merely to mako one week’s show of sports and athletics, but to encourage physical fitness for all time, and most important of all, once one has attained physical fitness, one should endeavour to retain it.-r-I am, etc.. S. K. SIDDELLS, Mayor.
