Women Delgates to Library Conference

MAKE NOTABLE CONTRIBUTION It is interesting to note that of the delegates attending the annual conference of the New Zealand Library Association in Palmerston North this week there was an equal if not greater proportion of womenfolk, many of whom have given fine service to the association. Among these are Miss Ellen Melville, of Auckland, a past president representing the Auckland Public Library; Miss A. M. Blackett, librarian of the highest standing at Wanganui, who had a hand in designing tho Wanganui Library, a gem of its kind; Alias A. Woodhousef, of the Turnbull Library, whose forte is cataloguing; Alias Fleming, of Otago University Library, ylso expert in this direction; Miss A. K. Elliott (Timaru) who has been elected to tho council for her first time; Airs. H. C. V. Somerset, of Feilding, a w oman of many parts; Miss D. G. Bibby, of Wellington, who has had the responsibility of taking a verbatim report of proceedings; then there is our own Mrs. E. L. Christian who has brought many original ideas to the work, just to mention a few.

A courtesy that has been much appreciated by the hard-working delegates has been the provision of dainty morn ing and afternoon tea by a small baud of ladies each day, under the capable direction of Mrs. D. Evans who has also given thought to arranging flowers in the hall. A special vote of thanks was conveyed to the ladies on the motion of Mr. Lorimer, field librarian of tho Country Library Service.

Last evening many of the visitors found pleasant relaxation as the guest* of Airs. Christian at supper at her home in Queen Street. There was a cheerful exchange of chatter and before the party terminated Air. E. J. Bell, of Christchurch, returned thanks on behalf of tho visitors to Airs. Christian for the delightfully informal gathering, his remarks being endorsed by acclamation. This morning the visitors will be taken on sight-seeing tours with morning tea sandwiched in between an 1 during the day most of them will leave on their homeward journeys.
