Autumn Meeting at Woodville Opens at Noon To-day

Great Fields are Engaged Course is in Splendid Order

Betting Will be Single-pool The Woodville District Jockey Club’s popular autumn meeting will be opened to-day and concluded to-morrow. Excellent fields have been carded for to-day’s events and there is every prospect of exciting racing. The big course, with its long straight, is in splendid order and the rain which fell on Wednesday will have taken the sting out of the going. The times should be fast and close finishes are indicated. The first race is timed to start at noon and the betting will be single-pool.

The programme will be opened with he Maiden Plate, for which there are jxteen aceptors. Horses which have ieen in the money this season are lallcy, Prediction, Titter, Cuisinier, nd The Ring, and others that have shown some iorm are Prediction, Brazil and Richelieu Pearl. There is a chance of a surprise but the betting may point to The Ring, Halley, Brazil and Cuisinier. Next is the highweight, which will be decided over a mile and a j quarter. There are eight acceptors and Boatsong, Bumble, Dancing Flame have recent winning form and the favourite is likely to be one of these. Dancing Flame beat Mataroa on the first day of tho Pahiatua meeting but Mataroa won tho second day and Dancing Flamo finished out of tho money'. Ebb and Flow had a race at Pahiatua and ho should be improved. To reduce it to three, those likely to appeal are Mataroa, Boatsong and Bumble. The third race is the Woodville Handicap, which is timed to start at 1.25. Dungarvan heads tho weights with 9.0 but now that he has struck form the weight should not stop him. Master Cyklon, Big Dook and Tiger Gain are from Hawke’s Bay and Master Cyklon and Big Dook are reported to be in great order for to-day. Play On will have appreciated the let-up and ho races well fresh. His form earlier in the season was impressive. Hunting Cat raced well at Christmas time but after making a forward move running to the horns turn in the Pahiatua Cup, he failed to sustain the effort. Lady Furst headheated with Dungarvan in the Tonka Stakes at Hawera last Saturday and she is likely to be in better order to-day. Corroboree has a liking for the course and others the long straight will suit are Helen Ford and Galteemore. It is a splendid field and the issue is very open. The betting, however, may point most strongly to Lady Furst, Dungarvan, Helen Ford. Next is the Sapling Stakes for which there are two brackets. One is for Gayest Son, Sunola and Flying Flag and the other for Social Credit and Likely Lady. Social Credit, however, is an unlikely starter. The top-weight is Counter, tho colt which won the Juvenile

Handicap on the second day of the Pahiatua meeting. In that race En- ’ dorsement (first day winner) and Kcj lxua, a stylish filly, were in the minor 'places. On the first day at Pahiatun •Newbury Queen was runner-up to Ei»' J dorsement, and at Ashhurst Flying Flag attracted attention with a meritorious second to Judgment. Portal, Vascones, Sunola and Caution, have been in the I money and Chevychasc has been showiug pace in track work at Awapuni. The winner is well concealed but the fancies may be tho Flying Flag-Sunola-Gayest Son bracket, Newbury Queen, Chcvychase. There are nine acceptors for tho President’s Handicap and tho recent winners engaged arc Lady Lyric and Rowana. Earl Colossus has been racing well but without success and Hunting Mint, White Gold and Ycd Prior have ( been working well. Joe Louis looks well but he has not raced for some time; Classical, however, won at her last start. The favourites may be Lady Lyric, Rowana and White Gold. Of the open sprint field Silver River claims a prior engagement. Without 1 him there is material for a great race and the issue is very open. Luculius 1 Lad has pride of place and he should go 1 well. Mittie and Alunga, when ready, ‘ are capable of holding their own with ‘ really good class sprinters, and the 1 same applies to Flammarion. Florence Mills haß been galloping exceptionally well at Awapuni- and she should give a I good account of: herself to-day. Brun--1 hild disappointed at Pahiatua but there 1 is no doubt about her pace. Solaria might upset calculations but the public 1 fancies may be Florence Mills, Mittie and Brunhild. The Kumeroa Handicap, a 10-furlong race for hacks, has drawn the smallost ( field of the day and the light-weight, , The Ring, is an acceptor for an earlier event. The favourites are likely to be Old Bill, Mother-in-Lttw, Sudan. The day will conclude with the County Handicap, the hack sprint, i There are thirteen acceptors, two of • which, Jacynth and Imogen, are bracki eted. Red Cat, Jeanne, Thrasos, Mischel, Elettra and Golden Flame, will all have to be considered but the best fancied may be 1 Red Cat, Elettra and Mischel.

PROSPECTS FOR WOODVILLE Horses which may bo fancied in their engagements at Woodville to-day are as under: — Maiden Plate: Titter, Brazil, Cuisinier. Oringi Highweight: Mataroa, Bumble, Boatsong.
