Women’s Institutes

STANWAY A pleasant afternoon was spent by' the members of the institute when an open air meeting was held in Airs. F. Crainc’s garden, which was beautifully sheltered from the rather boisterous wind. The gardens were a wealth of blooms, huge bushes of many shaded hydrangeas being particularly admired. The business part of the meeting was held in the shado of fruit trees. Correspondence was received regarding the group meeting to be held at Bulls on February 20. Correspondence was also read dealing with box lectures conducted by the home science section, Alassey College. This matter was held over until next meeting. A vote of thanks was accorded Miss Clere and Mrs. Harvey for their work in connection with the miniature garden. Several competitions were held during the afternoon, Miss Nola Jefferies and Mrs. Winder being the winners. Afternoon tea was served on the the lawns by the hostesses, Mesdames Whitehead, Winder, Cole and Miss Clere. The winners of the monthly competitions were as follow: Best bloom, Mrs. Whitehead (gladioli) 1, Mrs. and Miss Rosser equal 2; oven-cloth and kettle-holder, Aliss Jean Rosser 1; melting moments, Miss Zena Jefferies 1, Miss Nola Jefferies 2. The hostesses for the March meeting will be Mesdames E. Christian, Collingham, T. Green and Miss D. Collingham, and the competitions, cooking (three kisses) and tllb best bloom, and the best article made from one yard of Britway. GLEN OROUA

Mrs. Wheeler presided over a good attendance at the February meeting. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect to the late Mrs. Woodhouse, a member who passed away recently. Apologies for absence were received for Mrs. Milne and Airs. R. Boyce. Members were sorry to learn of the impending departure from the district of Aliss Mead. Arrangements were made for a picnic, to take place on February 18, at Mr. B. Thompson’s bush at Kopane. It was left for the secretary to write for permission. Alesdames Wallace and Parlane donated 2s 6d each toward the picnic funds, Alesdames Vallender and Boswell cordials, and Mrs. Vallender a trophy for the men. The demonstration for the afternoon on floral w’ork was given by Mrs. Drew, of Sanson, the bouquet she made being handed to the oldest member, Mrs. J. Boyce. Afternoon tea was then handed round by the hostesses, Mcsdajnus Ihle, J. Boyce, Bchaw and Aliss AI. Pearson. Competitions resulted: Best bloom, Airs. Burnaby 1, Mrs. C. y. Hamlin 2, Mrs. Davey 3; vase of flowers, Miss M. Vallender 1, Mrs. Lawlor 2, Mrs. Boswell and Mrs. Schaw equal 3; school child’s petticoat, Mrs. Vallender 1. Competitions for the Alarch meeting will be for gems (white) and knitted tea cosy (group meeting). Hostesses will be Mesdanfcs Watkins, Vallender and Miss Mead. Members were reminded of the group meeting to be held at Glen Oroua on March 22 and final arrangements were left until next month.

At the February meeting there was a very good attendance. Invitations were received from Levin and Kimber- j ley Institutes to attend their birthday parties. Arrangements were made for j a bazaar to be held in conjunction with tho local hall committee. During the social half hour a competition guessing the number of seeds on a corn-cob was held. A mime was presented by the social circle. Tho usual monthly competition for the best bloom was won by Airs Koberstein. The serving of afternoon tea by the hostesses concluded the meeting. BUNNYTHORPE Mrs Jackson presided at the first meeting of the New Year and welcomed several visitors. Airs Northcote being enrolled as a member. Apologies were received from Miss Gore and Alesdames Tomlinsen and Abraham. Alembers were reminded of the group meeting to be held at Colyton on Thursday, commencing at 1 o’clock. Members intending to be present were asked to take a plate. The schedule for the dahlia show to be held in Falmerston North on February 17 and 18 was received. Art and craft exhibits for the Centennial Exhibition must be ready by September. Airs Harris read a very interesting account of a visit to Golden Bay and the surrounding district, the scenory of which must be very beautiful, inspiring one with a desire to see some of these beauty spots. The social item was a song by Mrs Weastell, which was much enjoyed. The competition for tho best programme was won by Airs Guard. The best bloom, Mrs Leet 3, Miss J. Sinclair 2, Mrs Cundy 3. Nominations were taken for the new committee; any further entries requested to be sent to the secretary not later than February 22. A jumbled animal competition, organised by Airs Harris (who also donated the trophy for same) resulted in a tie by Airs Northcote and Mrs Pedersen, the former winning the draw. Another amusing competition, “An Exchange of Autographs,” four members, Mesdames Armstrong, Guy, Jopson, and I-cet, tied; each member receiving a trophy. Tho next meeting is the annual meeting—hostesses being Alesdames Harris, Alartini and Misses A ; and O. Sinclair. AWAHURI The February meeting was well attended and presided over by Mrs E. O.
