Fair But Windy From Our Own CorresDondent WELLINGTON, Last Night

Pressure is still relatively high to the north, but a rapidly deepening westerly depression is moving on to the southern portion of the South Island. Over Tasmania barometers are rising.

Winds: West to north. Aloderate to strong generally and rising to gale force in places from Taranaki and Hawke’s Bay southwards. A change to southwesterlies advancing from the south during to-night and to-morrow. Very boisterous conditions probable in the South Island.

Seas (New Zealand waters): Rough to high south of Cape Egmont and about Cook and Foveaux Straits, elsewhere moderate but rising. Eastern Tasman: Aloderate to strong west to south-west winds reaching gale force in parts of the central and southern portions. Seas rather rough to rough.

Weather: Mainly fair at first but raiu in western and southern portions of the South Island and gradually becoming more widespread. Some heavy falls and possibly local flooding in the far south. Nelson: Sunshine, light wind. West Coast: Overcast, light wind. Christchurch: Overcast, light wind. Timaru: Cloudy, light wind. Dunedin: Overcast, light wind. Invercargill: Overcast, light wind. YESTERDAY’S TEMPERATURES Maximum: 66 degrees F. Alinimum: 54 degrees F.
