Proposed Otawhao Road
DEADLOCK BEACHED OFFENCE TAKEN AT ALLEGED BREACH OF ETIQUETTE The question of providing alternative access from Kumeroa to Dannevirke through the Otawhao block was shelved indefinitely unless the settlers concerned make a further move in the matter, with the receipt of a letter from the Woodville County Council by the Dannevirke County at the latter council’s meeting yesterday. The Woodville County Council stated that, with regard to the proposed Otawhao or Otopo Roads, it was prepared to maintain the road within the Woodville county boundary provided the Government dedicated, formed, bridged, culverted and metalled the road. A conference would be futile at the present time, the letter continued. The chairman, Mr. A. H. Hansen, moved that the letter be received. Cr. 11. Frederickson remarked that it was rather a pity that the settlers affected could not get the necessary assistance from either county and euggested that the best thing they could do would be to make a petition to be taken over by the Dannevirke County so that they might be assisted. “They have nothing to lose,” he added, “but would gain because we are working on a lower rate than Woodville is.” Ho also stated that it was not etiquette for one county council to criticise the finances of a neighbouring council as had been done at Woodville. Cr. Stratford agreed and suggested that in future such financial discussions should be taken in committee. Tho Woodville Council’s letter was received, the discussion then lapsing.
