Horses For Woodville Gallop at Awapuni

Semi-final Trials Were

Interesting

PLOUGH WAS VERY FAST AHD TIMES WERE GOOD

With Woodville only three days away and Wanganui next week, there was Increased activity at Awapuni yesterday morning, and the dust was lifted in clouds from the plough, which was particularly fast. The morning was fine and there was no wind.

There rvas only one gallop on the. course proper, that of Newbury Queen (W. J. Broughton) and Millament (R. B. Ireland), the fillies cutting out half a mile in 52, the last three in 38 3-5, and the former bold a very slight advantage at the finish. Both are engaged ( at Woodville, Millament being nomin-j ated for the second day. Oratory (G. Pratt) was the first one to go fast on the plough. Her task was over four, which she ran in 52, and she came home very fast in 38 2-5, working very well. Good Effort by The Bigot The Bigot (W. J. Broughton) was next and he was galloped a mile. He ran the first five in 1.6 3-5, and, picked up By the Pox Earth colt (G. R. Tattersall) at the entrance to the straight, he finished solidly in 1.47, the last six in 1.20 and the last three in 40 2-5. He is in great heart at present and he should strip a fit horse for the Wanganui Cup. Laughing Lass (XX Redstone) sprinted five from a standing start in 1.4 3-5, and she was flying at the finish after running the last four in 50. She is always a generous galloper but she appeared to put even more life into her work yesterday morning. Vadanoe (Broughton) and Royal Lassie (Chaplin), under a good hold, were clocked to run five in 1.9, and Great Legion (Broughton) was not permitted to do much better than even time over seven. When this colt has finished growing he should fulfil his early promise. Ecstatic (Tattersall) was brilliant over four in 52 2-5, the last three in better than 39, and the two-year-olds, Sanciful (J. Pratt) and Katesbridge (Williamson) were clocked to run the last two of four in 26 3-5. Tangled and Riotous were out doing useful pace work. The former is being prepared for Riverton at Easter. La Bru and Chevychase An interesting trial was that between La Bru (Tattersall) and Chevychase (Ireland). It was over half a mile and they went past the peg together. Chevychase, on the inner, held a slight advantage into the straight and she retained it to the post though neither appeared to bo undor pressure. Ihe time for the full distance was 52, the list three in 38 3-5. Chevychase is accepted for Friday and it will not be a surprise if she takes some part in the finish as she appears to be improving all the time. A useful six was recorded by Ted Prior (Broughton) and Thrasos (Anderson). They ran the first three in 39 3-5 and they came home in 41 to complete in 1.20 3-5.

Caution (W. Jenkins) and Deflation (K. Kanake) finished in front of Moradabad (M. Bowden) after four in 54, the last three in 39 3-5, and Ouisinier (Tattersall) beat Ouddler (Jenkins) by two lengths over five, the last four in 54. Ouisinier has been working well sine© Pahiatua.

Florence Mills (Tattersall) began quietly and she was not required to do her best over five in 1.6 3-5, the last three in 40 3-5. She should go well at Woodville.

Brazil (Broughton) sprinted six in 1.20 2-5 after a slow beginnnig and he was going solidly at the finish, the last three taking him 39. It was a really good effort. Beaupartir (Ireland) drew away from Taumau (A. McDonald) at the end of seven run in 1.36, but it was just a working gallop. The colt may give the others something to think about in the Wanganui Cup. Cerroboree and Old Bill As on Saturday, Corroboree (Tattersall) and Old Bill (Bowden) were galloped a mile, and without being under pressure they completed in 1.48 3-5 with Old Bill apparently doing the better of the two. The last seven took them 1.35 and they maintained an even pace throughout. Corroboree is still showing slight signs of the injury be received at Trentham, but he does not move badly after he has been warmed up. White Gold Brilliant White Gold galloped brilliantly on Saturday and who repouted the performance yesterday morning. Her task was over seven and she broke 50 for the first half mile, Sho ran five in 1.4 2-5 and she came homo in 28 to complete in 1.32 2-5. Her form has been something of n puzzle so far but she may do better in the near future. Among the horses out doing pace work wero Conveyer, looking bright and well, Old Surrey, who wanted to gallop, Golden Bulge, who looks none the w r orsc for Hawora, and Bumble and Sudan. Riding Engagements The following riding engagements hav© been Announced for W. J. Broughton; Brazil, Siegmund, Red Cat, Lady Lyric, Newbufy Queen. G. R. OPPORTUNITIES IN PRIZE MONEY The price paid by Mr. H. E. Tancred for the New Zealand tw r o-year-old High Caste (Bulandshar —The Begum) has not been made public. It is stated, however, that ho is not looking to the betting ring to get a return of tho money invested, but is relying upon the colt’s earnings in stakes. “Fow owners would content themselves in that fashion—Mr. Tancred ’a brother, for one, might not—but though it is probablo a substantial sum was l paid for High Caste, ho certainly has a ■ chance of returning it in stakes (writos i Pilot of the Sydney Reforee). His i present two and throo-year-old Ausi tralian engagements, aud first money l attached to each race, are as follow: f At Two Years.

* 'The total value of first money in the races enumerated is £24,955, and though a start in the lot is practically impossible, the owner of a young horse i has opportunities for covering his cxi ponditure by winning a couple of races. ’ ’
