From Our • »v *--snondent. Women's Institute. The first Stanway W.!. meeting of the New Year was held in Mrs R. Cockburn’s garden, and an enjoyable time was spent by ail, the weather being beautifully fine and calm. For the business portion of the programme all gathered in the shade of a fine old walnut tree. Mrs A Marl shall extended New Year greetings to all iand welcomed the visitors present. It j was decided to hold the February meeting on the second Wednesday on account of the Feilding Show. It will be held in Mrs b . Craine’s garden. Members were alsc iemmded that nominations for the new committee close in February; also that a committee meeting will be held in the Stanway nail on Tuesday. Competition winners were Mesdames Harvey, Winder, and Miss Nola Jefferies. Afternoon tea Mesdames Rosser, Short and Misses R.’ Marshall and M., Guy. Further competi tions held during the afternoon resulted: Decorated saucer, Mrs Harvey 1, Miss Jean Groves 2; best bloom, Mrs A. Marshall 1, Miss Jean Rosser 2; cooking (3 meringues), Miss Ruth Marshall 1, Mrs i. Marshall 2. Miss Clere consented to take charge of the miniature garden, to be entered in the Institute section at the forth coming show. The hostesses for the February meeting are Mesdames Whitehead. Winder, Cole and Miss Clere. Personal and General. Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Cameron and smaJJ son are the guests of Miss Clere, “Ormsby.” Mr. Clere, senr., of Wellington, is staying with his daughter, Miss M. Clere. Mrs. J. Parsons and her sister-in-law, Mrs. F. Cowdrey, left on Saturday to spend a holiday at Castlecliff beach. Miss D. Cheyne has returned to her home in Wellington after spending a holiday with Mrs. A Green. Miss Margaret Dernier is holidaying with relatives in Wellington. Mr. F. Craine, “Mona vale,” was a visitor to Wellington for the wool sale. Mrs. A. Shannon, “Mahoe,” has return ed home from an enjoyable holiday spent at Christchurch. After spending the Christmas and New Year holidays with her daughter, Mrs. J. Macfarlane, Mrs. Smith, senr., has return ed to Palmerston North. Messrs. J. and G. Marshall have return ed to Galatea after holidaying with rela tives in this district. Mrs. Willy, Lake Ellesmere, is staying with her brother, Mr. G. Johnston. Miss P. Green, Whenuakura, afte: spending Christmas with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. Green, left on an extended motor tour of the north. Betty Macfarlane is staying with relatives at Ohau. Shearing operations are now on the wane in this district and farmers are en deavouring to gather in their hay, but the boisterous weather is making work very difficult indeed.
