The Tyrant's Enemy
“One of the curses of our time,” said Mr. Philip Guedalla, the historian, in a recent speech, “is that so few public men seem to know any history at all. About 3000 years ago, an Egyptian carved in stone the first chapter of Jewish history. It read, ‘ Israel is destroyed; its seed is not.’ But neither he nor anything representing him is in the earth to-day outside the glass cases of museums, and the Jews are still here. “Pharaoh, the Assyrian, and the Roman, who had made an end of the Jewish State, had said, ‘lsrael is destroyed.* But the Jews have out-lived them all. The Inquisition caused it to be said, ‘lsrael is destroyed/ but once more the announcers of destruction were wrong. The ‘Black Hundred' also said it in Tsarist Russia; and there is no longer a Tsarist Russia. “And because that is the lesson, there is more need than ever that we should study it. The worst things that we can all think of have all happened before, and they all end less badly than they began. The whole march of history is forward and not backward. Time is against the tyrant. Germany is asking for justice. I cannot doubt that she will get it, and that when it comes it will be something more terrible than man’s justice—it will be the justice of Almighty God.”
